Three-Dimensional Printer Thinks Green

Industrial design students at Victoria University presented innovative prototypes. The project was to design and make an eco-friendly three-dimensional printer in four weeks with a limited budget.

Some crazy designs came out of the printers created but my favorite is the “Equinox”, pictured above. It focuses the power of the sun to selectively dry layers of recycled paint which in turn builds up fluid forms. It also happens to be the sweetest looking gyro I’ve ever seen.

A Different Kind Of Trek

For those looking to ride where no man has ridden before, take a look at this U.S.S. Enterprise-inspired bike. Photographer Alan Light took this shot at the 1982 San Diego Comic Con and while it may not be fresh it certainly is fresh looking. Check out how huge that horn is! I bet it can blast the opening theme of Star Trek so loud that Geordi La Forge would be able to see the sound waves.

It just goes to show that not much has changed in 26 years. Nerds will be nerds.

The Smoker’s Umbrella

For a smoker, catching a cig before work is a must whether the weather be rain or shine. Some of us can’t find a dry area half the time and if you’re in Seattle, forget it. In comes the Smoker’s Umbrella to save the day. Equipped with a clip-on ashtray, you’ll be able to keep dry and puff down without the rain invading your personal space.

About $20, the umbrella even comes in a cigarette-shaped tin to get the message across. It’s a nearly perfect umbrella. The only thing missing is a built-in lighter.

Bosix Watering Can Speakers

Conventional speaker design. It’s everything you loathe. The mediocrity, the bland coloring. You need a set of speakers that really lets you express yourself. Why not give the Bosix speakers a try? They come in wacky, bright colors and look like two watering can spouts mushed together.

According to Bosix, these are indeed 800W speakers, meaning you’re going to blow out the windows if you crank up the Van Halen on your iPod. $235 and they’re yours to keep.

A Dish Rack to Compliment the Couch

Sick of the typical, ugly dish rack that currently resides in your kitchen? Spice it up with the Dish Doctor from Magis. Designed by Marc Newson, this green bastard has dual utensil holders and a bunch of colorful pegs to hold your plates and dildos cups.

Is It a Candle or a Lamp? Make Up Your Fuckin’ Mind

Designer Adrien Rovero got confused when coming up with the Candlelight electric light. Half romantic candlelight dinner, half-end-table study lamp. You’ll either impress your date for the evening or confuse her. It’s a simple decision: light the candle or flick the switch? Or you could even light ‘em both up simultaneously.

After dropping $150 on this dual light source, you’ll only find yourself using the candle side to mitigate your electric bill to make up for the money lost after buying this thing.

City Pillows

Designer Florence Bost must be an avid reader of Gearfuse. His latest creation, City Pillows, are colorful pillows with electronic integrated into the fabric. You’ll find the TRON-esuqe EL wiring and maybe a few LEDs thrown in for good measure. Supposedly, the pillows are supposed to enhance your visual and sensual experience with them. These are what we call buzzwords.

There’s a bunch of different pillows over on Florence’s site for sale but you’ll have to contact her directly for a price. If you’re looking for a unique gift for anyone who enjoys sleeping and creativity/art, then this is the way to go.

Infinium Labs’ Phantom Lapboard Is Released

Remember the Phantom gaming system? The one which promised you’d be able to play games streamed over the Internet through a broadband connection for a monthly fee? Me neither. Yet after six long years of nobody giving a fuck, they’ve finally decided to release the keyboard designed for the system.

The Phantom Lapboard is nothing special. It sits on your lap and you’re able to incline the top part of the keyboard to reveal a space underneath for mousing.  At $129, we’re just astonished to see that it even has a price tag and saw the light of day, regardless of its overpricing. We’re still not going to buy it. Are you?

Stove Design Burns Eyes In More Ways Than One

Check out this stove. It’s called the Arcus and it has the ability to change the temperature of a pot or pan simply with a twist of your wrist. With a concept design like this one, I had hoped the designer, Manuel Perez Prada, would’ve included the ability to literally raise the heat to a higher elevation. This way, when I buy a stove that looks like this I can promptly stand over it, turn it on to extreme temperatures and burn my face off.

Xip3: Backpack, Shirt, Pillow

I don’t know about you but I’m always doing one of three things: smuggling drugs in from Canada, wearing a shirt, or sleeping. It’s a tough life, I know. Luckily, there’s the Xip3, a shirt that turns into a backpack and a pillow when you need it. Equipped with Polartec 200 lining, it’s a pretty ideal shirt for rough conditions in nature. Perfect for that frosty morning hike in the woods of Maine.

You wouldn’t want to wear this warm shirt in the summer but you don’t want to put it away. A little folding action and you have yourself a durable backpack for a picnic. After you consumer copious amounts of wine and bread, pass out on the grass in comfort by turning your backpack into a pillow. You see? It’s like a virtuous cycle of comfort and convenience.
