Review: Piezo by Rogue Amoeba

Audio recording on the Mac can seem like a challenging task. However, the audio experts at Rogue Amoeba thought differently and decided to put out a special audio recording program, Piezo.

What to expect?

Even though several of the tools on Mac are quite powerful, they can be a little overwhelming for beginners and intermediate users. Don’t worry. Piezo, with its simple interface, hopes to change that by only focusing on audio recording from literally any application, forgoing all bells and whistles. With its reasonable pricing, extremely simple and functional interface and invaluable practicality, it has all the right ingredients to be your next audio recording program.

How does it work?

While there are many free software applications to record audio, only a select few allow you to record system audio without having to go through a series of processes.

Piezo simplifies the whole thing with a one-click action to record audio from literally any application or input device.  You can configure Piezo to record from any open application, which includes Skype, web browsers and streaming apps such as Spotify too.

This might come in real handy if you are searching for a reliable tool to help you record voice calls over Google or Skype on the fly, or if you need to extract audio from a web app.

The minimal interface is appointed with a simple audio source drop down, a timer for recording, a VU meter and a fairly big recording button. It’s a welcome change for podcasters who have used bloated, big and feature-packed professional grade audio recording software packages.

It is a bit of a letdown that it does not come packed with several options and that you cannot fiddle with the recorded audio, however its ease of use is quite impressive if you are looking to record something on the fly.

What’s special?

It has completely transformed the way we all look at audio recording software. Professional software packages for audio recording are usually expensive and take up a great deal of resources in terms of storage and processing power. Piezo, however, won’t drain your computer’s resources or put a dent to your wallet. It is one of the most lightweight audio recording software programs for Mac which at its frugal best only takes a few megabytes of storage and less than a minute to download, but it’s a completely functional, all in one digital audio recording tool.

Bottom line

Piezo does not have a very flashy name that echoes all over the recording community, but it is as handy as some of the most popular audio recording software programs. However, it is easy to use, inexpensive and professional in all ways.

P.S: Download the free version from developer’s site and test it out but keep in mind that it only allows you to record up to 10 minutes at a time. Consider upgrading to full version if you are looking to record something longer.
