Model Vehicles with In-Car Wi-fi

With the introduction of smartphone technologies, wireless connectivity has become an integral part of the new ecosystem, making it easier for individuals to live, work and have fun. They connect to a wide range of networks, which provides a platform for daily wireless applications like location-based apps, video streaming, voice/text communications and internet connectivity. The systems and standards continue to evolve to keep up with the changing wireless landscape. Most importantly, the current generation is further engaging in location-ware apps and media-rich content, leading to increased demand for faster connectivity and mobile bandwidth from wherever they are. As such, the surging demand for connectivity has spawned the development of automobiles that can have Wi-Fi hotspots. They allow users to stay connected to the internet while driving. The invention has stirred a lot of debate as analysts seek to understand if car wi-fi is the next big thing. Next is a look at vehicle brands and services with in-car Wi-Fi systems.

With this in mind, the manufacturer announced it would roll out the largest number of cars with built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi. Chevrolet joined a growing list of manufacturers-Audi and Chrysler Ram who will be adding 4G connectivity to their vehicles. The manufacturer will offer different levels of data and monthly charges, ranging from $10-$50 every month.

BMW

As at last year, the BMW and DT joined forces with leading German telecoms to launch an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot to allow fast internet browsing. The mobile-enabled hotspot creates a password protected 5G connection that serves up to ten Wi-Fi devices to the high-speed internet at the same time without the need of a SIM card. As such, other passengers can enjoy surfing by tethering to the central device. Drivers who are already connected to the BMW ConnectedDrive can order their connection to the wireless hotspot via Deutsche Telekom HotSpot Drive portal. The car Wi-Fi connectivity was first integrated into the latest BMW7 series with other models to follow.

The system also informs the driver about vehicle’s health and location and provides security alerts accessible via a smartphone application. Ford will be partnering with Delphi Automotive and Verizon Telematics to update older vehicles
