With Hollywood’s latest interpretation of “The Hobbit” having its first installment released in about a year, this is a bit ironic. Anthropologists are arguing over whether a tiny 18,000 year old skull discovered in Indonesia could have actually come from a hobbit-like race.
Some researchers are claiming that the tiny skull is actually an alternate species of Homo sapiens. However, others are more skeptical. Critics believe that the skull actually came from an ancient human who had microcephaly, a condition which causes the head to be much smaller than normal. Debate on this subject is still ongoing, and researchers probably won’t come to a consensus anytime soon.
I’ll be more convinced when they begin unearthing fossils of their abnormally large, hairy feet.
