Automated License Plate Recognition makes traffic violators tremble with fear

Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) from PIPS Technology is preparing for wide scale use among law enforcement agencies through the nation. ALPR is expected to raise the efficiency of cops many times over. The ALPR mounted camera can recognize up to 3000 license plates an hour. Until now, only a task Arnold Schwarzenegger could accomplish. As police patrol their district, the ALPR unit automatically compares license plates to wanted automobiles nationwide, sounding an alarm within a few seconds of recognition, allowing the cop to focus on current law breaking.

ALPR is said to have already paid itself off while in use through Utah’s Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division (UT-MVED). — Andrew Dobrow
