Hyperlink: Cursors Through Art

The product of artist Ben Fino-Radin, “Hyperlink” is a four-piece series of needlepoint yarn sculptures that feature the ever-prominent desktop cursor. These are huge works of art too, meaning that Ben most likely spent hours looking at a pixelated hand in Photoshop for hours on end. It’s from 2006 but old things can be good too, you know.

Kung-Fu Companion Kicks Butt And Takes Names

Desktop companions are an integral piece to everyone’s computer room feng shui. Now that doesn’t mean you need to settle for some boring chameleon that does nothing more than let his tongue loose every once and awhile.

Instead, why not try the Kung-Fu Boy? He’ll kick and chop his way into your heart all while making the appropriate sound effects, of course. A built-in sound sensor alerts the boy of unsuspecting foe for whom to chop at. It’s a shame they’re only available in Japan for $18, a price that makes the other desktop companions seem like penny pinchers.

The Beagle Board Does Not Include Free Peanuts

Digi-Key has unleashed its power house single-board computer called the Beagle Board. This developer dream board is perfect for DIY projects and ground level design work. Don’t judge it by its size either, its processor: the ARM Cortex A8, runs up to 600MHz while delivering over 1,200 MIPS (million instructions per second). It packs quite a punch for a 3″ x 3″ board.

It connects to your computer via mini-A to standard-A adapter with a high speed USB 2.0 port and even supports 1280×1024 DVI-D video output. Listen, I could go on and on about the heat this baby’s packing, but it’d be best to get one for yourself and try it out. Maybe you’ve got what it takes to make a game on it, or even better: a robot. It’s relatively cheap, too. At $149, its the least expensive, most powerful development board on the market that I’ve heard of.

Midori: Beyond Windows

I can’t imagine a world without Windows. It seems like only yesterday I was spending hours trying to figure how to change my desktop wallpaper on Windows 3.1. Word is that Microsoft is getting a head start on their next operating system that’ll replace Windows entirely. Their new project, Midori, centers around the Internet, casting out the dependency your operating system has on a single PC. XP might have been dead, but now Windows altogether is officially dead.

Windows is unlikely to be able to cope with the pace of change in future technology and the way we use it, so Microsoft is forced to ditch the blue screen of death inducing OS in favor of something that isn’t tied tightly to a single computer’s hardware. Who cares if Vista was incomplete? It’s getting ditched regardless. Midori is their new incomplete “work in progess”.

Don’t Throw Away That Busted iPod Just Yet

Who says busted technology can’t have a second chance? After her brother backed over his own iPod with a car, Crafster.org user Stefferroo posted this DIY project directly inspired by the Nintendo controller mouse. She magically turned a ruined iPod into a working mouse.

Don’t let the screen fool you, this MP3 player does not play music at all but the creator decided to put a fake picture to let everyone know what song she has stuck on repeat. It goes great with a Mac desktop and looks solid in comparison to many of the mice we’ve seen. Nice job, Stef!

USB Chameleon Chills On Your Monitor

You can never have enough desktop companions cluttering your desk and cramping your monitor. This reptilian USB friend is indigenous to cum-ridden desks everywhere and comes in three extreme colors: green, orange and yellow. Just plug it into your computer and it’ll rotate its eyes and randomly flick its tongue. It’s almost like a real chameleon; a real chameleon made of plastic.

For $25.33, you’re going to feel ripped off at the fact that this reptile doesn’t change colors like every other chameleon on the planet. On the other hand, it’s a great accessory to have resting on top of your monitor so it can stare at you yearningly while you masturbate in front of it.

Amphibious PC Keeps You Afloat

Swimming pool gadgets are the best kind of gadgets. Unfortunately, not all of them can keep people who lack buoyancy afloat.  Fortunately, for the lethargic, the “PC of the Swim-Rings” has a flotation device around the computers base which is reminiscent of a LifeSaver candy. The amphibious PC is fitted with a solar power driven processor, water-cooling system, GPRS receiver, Bluetooth wireless solutions, finger-touch input, magnetic charging interface and it’s even water-proof (go figure).

It could be used as a desktop for in-home use, but where’s the fun in that? At the moment the “PC of the Swim-Rings” is only a concept. A concept that, by the sound of the specs, is said to be better geared than any PC I’ve ever owned.

Kissass PC for Saving the Earth

It’s no mystery that home computers use up a lot of precious energy we could be using towards something else.  Ben Chase has designed a working computer that runs on the Windows operating system and only consumes an astonishing 27-watts of power. Its components are even upgradeable without the need of tools.

Hardware manufacturers could take a note from Ben Chase (or give him a job.) Anything to have these eco-friendly PCs in every household within the next few years.

Forget about the fact that this is even a PC, but even if this were a real motorcycle, the green LED glow would capture my attention. Now, imagine being able to have this Motorcycled Case Mod in your office or computer den.

This liquid-cooled Motorcycle Case holds the tradition of other vehicle themed case mods, but goes completely overboard with the modding, leaving the PC as just a footnote on the rump of the bike. (more…)

Epic Pink Floyd “The Wall” PC Case Mod

You could say that all in all, this PC case mod is just another brick in the wall, but we would have to fully disagree with you. This Pink Floyd “The Wall” PC Case mod is not merely a new skin, but a fully-functioning piece of art all on its own.

Totally custom made, The Wall PC reminds me of the days where I would sit around listening to Pink Floyd’s classic album on repeat. Using imagery from both the film and the album itself, this PC is one that not only looks hot as hell, but will add some conceptual modern art spark to whatever room it’s showcased. PC mod, I wish you were here. Hit the jump for a bunch more awesome pics. (more…)
