The iPhone had already proven itself to be capable of unique musical instrumentation in its own right, but this iPhone orchestra is taking classical music to the next level.

Students of the University of Michigan were offered the chance to take a course entitled “Building a Mobile Phone Ensemble.” Students were encouraged to use the phone’s touch-screen, microphone, GPS, compass, wireless sensor and accelerometer to create a one-of-a-kind musical instrument. On December 9, the class will debut as a single unit, performing their music for an overwhelmingly virgin audience.
