Inspired by the buzz that the multi-touch iPhone has built for itself, Apple has a next-gen mouse in the works that could utilize some of the same technology. On December 6, 2006, Apple filed a patent for their mouse design, which will be able to switch through operational modes depending on the users hand positioning on the mouse.

The patent, which is still under review, was only revealed publicly very recently, but is already stirring up a commotion through tech channels. The patent also speaks of concealed navigation buttons, much like the Apple Mighty Mouse, stating “The buttons may be widely varied. For example, the buttons may be mechanical buttons that are disposed in the housing or a unified button/housing that incorporates the functionality of a button (or buttons) directly into the mouse housing.” it will be interesting to see a finished product.
