Junkfood maker prints QR code on prawn crackers

Alphabet soup is so 20th century that a Japanese junkfood company, Shimahide, has decided to print QR code on their famous prawn crackers (ebi senbei). What it does is that it allows different companies to print their content on each and every single piece of delicacies in the pack, for example a special URL for a marketing campaign. If the eaters are curious enough, they might try to read the QR code with their phone and actually find out what’s going on.

Shimahide is ready to showcase this new printing technology at the NET Marketing Forum 2007 which opens tomorrow. Apparently, they have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the right coloring and adhesion technology to make the pattern the most eligible. Whether or not we would see them in the market would depend on the Forum participants, let’s see if they are more interested in the food itself or what’s printed up there. —Sam Chan
