How To Make Yourself More Marketable When Job Hunting

Considering a career change? There is no time like the present to begin searching for a new job. Wages are high, employment benefits are improving, and workers are finally getting a voice in labor. If it’s time to brush up the ol’ cover letter and add a few skills to the resume, consider adding what’s necessary to make you marketable!

Soft Skills

While making your education clear is always necessary, many companies are now looking for soft skills to accompany degrees and certifications. Even before Covid-19 changed the workplace, employers sought out individuals that were more than “book smart,” but also could prove to be positive additions to the culture and climate. Soft skills are often considered to be things that can’t be taught, or “people skills.” This category also includes teamwork, problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and so many more immeasurable traits that are vital to any job.

Additional Training

Want to look like a real go-getter? Be one! Take the time to get additional certifications if it’s relevant to your future career. Continue to learn! Consider a continuing education program or training from companies like hsi.com that you can add to your resume. While you’re at it, make sure to stay up to date on your certifications and best practices. Show them that you’re aware of your professional obligations and you take care of business. Companies like to see initiative and people that are motivated to always do better.

Become Active with a Professional or Volunteer Group

Again, being proactive can go a long way in the job market. Volunteering for organizations like Therapeutic Horsemanship or Big Brothers Big Sisters of America shows that you care for more than just yourself and you’re more likely to be a team player. Not all time commitments have to be completely selfless, you could also join a professional organization. Most of the time you get to network with people who know the business while also golfing or enjoying a happy hour.

Self-Confidence

It’s the most obvious but also the most difficult thing to have. Job hunting can be a scary task but you have to have the awareness and confidence to put yourself out there. Cast a wide net when it comes to job prospects and remember, experience doesn’t mean ability. If you’re new in a career or looking to make a switch, chances are, you’re very capable of doing it.

No matter the reason you’re looking for a new career, it never hurts to be prepared. Take the time to set yourself up for success and a new job will follow.
