The Apollo EX-1 suit’s “toroidal” joints were designed to give moon-bound astronauts complete freedom of movementperhaps too much freedom of movement; the design never made it into space. This image is from a New York Times slideshow that reveals highlights of a forthcoming exhibition from the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum going on tour this Spring. The suits are too fragile to travel, so they’ll be represented by photographs and x-ray images, according to Henry Fountain’s accompanying article.
