4 Ways Technology is Streamlining the Moving Process

Moving can be both stressful and chaotic. Even with planning and organization, there are many variables at play, and things can easily go wrong.

Technology in the hands

Technology can help ease the pain of moving by making it easier to find your home, book your mover, plan your move and pack up to leave.

1. Apps to Find Your New Home

Finding a new home has never been easier. No longer do you have to spend your weekend afternoons driving around town looking at home after home only to be disappointed with each one.

Apps like Zillow, Trulia and Redfin allow you to browse properties – to rent or own – from the comfort of your living room couch. Even the paperwork can be taken care of online, from communicating with your realtor to signing papers with your e-signature.

2. Booking Movers and Paying Online

Just as it’s easy to find your new home, it’s also easy to find, book and pay for a mover online. Allied Van Lines, for example, allows customers to get a quote online and even click to call right from their website. For long-distance moves, the company makes it easy to get started.

There are also comparison websites that allow you to enter your information and compare quotes from different movers.

Technology has made it easier than ever to find, book and pay for your mover without ever having to leave your living room.

3. Planning and Organizing the Move

One of the most frustrating and stressful parts of moving is planning and organizing everything. You only have so much time to pack, and there are only so many hours in the day.

Moving apps like MyMove and MoveAdviser can help make your life easier. Many of these apps have list makers, timeline creators, inventory documents and quoted estimates for movers. State Farm’s Move Tools app also offers to-do lists that help you better organize the move.

If you’d rather not use an app, there are other free tools, like Google Drive and Word Online, that allow you to create all of the documents you need for your move. With these tools, you can create spreadsheets, calendars, charts and everything else you need to plan your move.

You also have the option of printing out these documents for easy viewing and organization. You can even assign different family members to different packing chores, and organize these tasks on a printed calendar.

Technology can take the pain out of planning your move and ensure that you’re ready to go on moving day.

4. Packing and Purging

Need boxes for moving? Want to find a new home for your old stuff? Technology can help. With sites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, you can find boxes from local neighbors and sell or give away any items that you want to get rid of.

If you have items that you want to donate and won’t have the time to drop them off, you can schedule a pickup with the Salvation Army. They will come to your home and remove the items you no longer want or need.
