How To: Networked Graffiti Wall

Filed under: DIYs, Design, Hacks, Internet

If you’ve ever wanted to build your own Snake game, you could display from a building, you’ve got to start small first. Good thing Hack A Day’s Ian Lesnet lets you know how to construct a networked LED graffiti wall from scratch.  Showing off a one meter square, five by five matrix of LEDs inspired by Daft Punk, Ian thoroughly explains the step-by-step process to making your own.

Soon enough, you’ll be controlling all the lights displayed on this thing via the Internet. It’s very simple to manipulate with Javascript and it won’t take you very long to do. Happy hacking!

Facebook Is Very Real

As far as social networking sites go, Facebook’s popularity is unmatched. It’s a good thing it isn’t real life, otherwise I’d be getting poked all the time. The comedy group “Idiots of Ants” portray what it’d be like if people took social networking features and acted them out in person.

The video goes into detail showing a satirical Facebook chat amongst friends which includes writing on each others wall, accepting or ignoring friendship requests and even tagging photos all in real life.  Can’t wait to see them act out all of those extra apps no one cares about.

Light Rain Makes Little Sense

We’ve seen interactive projection walls before but none as artsy fartsy as Wowlab’s. A camera identifies the contours of a human body standing in front of a wall. The projection will then interact with the persons via rain drops splashing in reaction to shadow, water puddles are created, and in the water even constellations may appear.

Now if only I could make sense of all the lousy poetry riddled all over their website.

Self-Adhesive Mirror Tiles

This one’s a no brainer. For $10, you can net twenty 4″ x 4″ squares that are one side sticky, one side mirror(y). At 50 cents a pop, that’s not too shabby. Imagine the possibilities with these fuckers too. Throw them on your ceiling above your bed and boom: shitty mirror sex.

Or, if you’re lost at sea, just grab a few and slap them all over your body. As the sun shines, you’ll reflect light and surely draw attention to the rescue chopper circling above. Of course, if all else fails, you can paste them to the wall to spell out “PRINCE” and watch yourself dance around naked to “Purple Rain.”

Blobwall: Bubblegum Bricks of the Future?

Designer Greg Lynn apparently likes to think outside the box. And I really mean it! His latest creation, Blobwall is a fresh take on bricks and building materials. As you can see in the picture, the wall is designed from molded plastic blobs mixed with different polymers and colors. Sure, it’s not traditional like unlike other things in life, but could it one day be used to build a house or office building? Perhaps.

Greg plans to offer the Blobs in 10 different colors and will be available in stock shapes at first. Of course this is just a concept for now, but if you’d like to check Blobwall out in person, it’ll be on display at the SCI-Arc Gallery in Los Angeles from May 30th through July 13th.

Greenpix Zero Energy Wall Is Massively Colorful

Excitement is mounting about the Olympics in Beijing. Some pretty extravagant arrangements are being erected (LOLz, erect) to show off Beijing’s growing environmental friendliness. The Greenpix Zero Energy Wall stands at the Xicui entertainment complex near the site of the Olympic Games.

The Greenpix wall uses a combination of the largest color LED display technology with a photovoltaic system, which allows the wall to burn only the energy it produces itself. The big ass wall is planned to go live at some point this month with a bunch of video installations and live performances by artists from China, Europe and the US planned after its launch. Hit the jump for a video of the wall in action. (more…)

Two Timer: Two Timezones, One Clock

picture-1.png

There are plenty of mobile doodads these days which can tell you the time for just about any location in the world you’d care to know about. But for reading of different time zones right from your wall, many people and businesses still rely on using multiple clocks to read the current local time in a different zone.

The Two Timer uses a pretty snazzy design to allow for two timezones to be read simultaneously from the same clock in an analog fashion. Sure, you can be all fancy with your digital read outs that display all of the times in LED form, but have some class, man! Don’t you have any design dignity?! — Andrew Dobrow

Who Tall Are You?: Proving That Celebrities Can Be Short Too

who_tall.jpg

Whenever I’ve met a celebrity in real life, the most striking thing about them is usually how odd it is to see them in a real-life perspective. We’re so used to seeing them on the big screen, that it’s hard to believe that you can be taller than some of these people.

The Who Tall Are You? Mirror ranks your height along with well-known celebrities, allowing you to see who you’re taller than, and who’s the same height. I, personally, never knew that Kid Rock was only an inch or so shorter than Michael Jordan. I’m probably closer to Ben Stiller’s height. Thankfully, I’m a lot more entertaining, and totally sexier. — Andrew Dobrow
