The Dark Knight: The First Warner Film With BD-Live

Disney isn’t the only one releasing Blu-ray movies with BD-Live, a feature that enables you access content via the Internet. Warner Home Video has announced its first BD-Live enabled Blu-ray film will be The Dark Knight.

Some of the features included with the movie are My WB Commentary, which allows users to record their own commentary on the movie and overlay in picture-in-picture style on the film as it plays. Additionally, The Dark Knight will feature BD-Live community to allow fans to schedule screenings with friends and chat with other viewers as the movie plays. Look for the Blu-ray version on store shelves December 9th.

Not doing shit this week? Me neither. Let’s all stay home the entire week and watch episodes of Weird Science on Hulu.com. Of course I’m referring to the television show, not the awesome movie which has Bill Paxton turned into a Jabba the Hutt lookalike. Enough about the movie, check out the episodes Hulu is hosting and enjoy this awesome one right here on Gearfuse!

Enable 720p Video On YouTube

YouTube is great for entertainment, but quality is a whole other bag of marbles. When I have a video I plan on uploading, I don’t want it compressed to all hell and back for the purpose of streaming. Because of this, I usually use Vimeo for those vids. But thanks to a hack involving the URL of YouTube videos, you can now squeeze 720p HD quality vids from everyone’s favorite video website.

To do it, find the video you want in 720p and change the following text in the URL or embed code:

By changing that fmt variable to &fmt=22 or tacking on &ap=%2526fmt%3D22 to the embed URLs—that’s right, turn it up twice past 11—Youtube will kick out compatible videos at a whopping 720p resolution.

Extremely sweet. I’ve included some hacked video of CSI’s David Caruso to demonstrate. Just remember that 720p video means big bandwidth, so no slow connections and don’t go bitching at YouTube because your favorite video isn’t loading right away.

Once In A Lifetime: Meteors In Canada

So there’s not exactly a lot of background on this video but from what I can gather, this is a police officer’s dashcam capturing a meteor falling in the sky over Edmonton, Canada. It’s quite the sight to see, considering that I’d be thinking about complete Armageddon if the sky lit up like that around here. I have yet to see a decent meteor shower. Is that what they look like? That’s some scary looking shit.

Software I Actually Bought: MediaLink

I have to come clean for a minute. I haven’t purchased any Mac or PC software in well over three years. I’m a pirating machine and I’d like to think I do it very well. However, I recently got a demo of some software called MediaLink from Nullriver Software. It essentially links my Macs to my Playstation 3 out in the living room of my apartment. This allows me to stream all those pirated TV shows and movies to the big screen TV out in the other room. I can also stream all my iPhoto photos and iTunes music as well. Think of it as a godsend.

Well after using the demo, I said “Fuck it.” and plunked down the $20 for MediaLink. It feels nice to support a company making a utility that is indispensable to me. My roommates and I have been ghetto-hacking our TV for months, trying to get out movies and such to stream or playback. Now my PS3 does everything I’ve ever wanted: Next-gen gaming, Blu-ray playback, classic gaming, streaming audio, video and photos and Internet browsing.

If you have a Playstation 3, I highly recommend checking out MediaLink. You won’t regret it. Nullriver also makes a piece of software for the Xbox 360 called Connect360 that does the same sort of thing.

Sony’s High Quality Camera For Cellphones

Today, Sony announced its new breakthrough in cellphone cameras with a camera that’s as powerful, if not more, than my handheld Canon. It’s managed to shrink the size of the sensor down so much, that a 12.25-megapixel, 28mm equivalent CMOS camera can now fit within a cellphone.

On top of image quality and detail comparable to most point and shoot cameras, this newly developed lens will also be capable of shooting 1080p video at up to 27 frames per second. With video quality that superb, you’ll certainly need to upgrade that beat up Sandisk SD card of yours if you want to hold any video of decent length.

Samsung P3 Sneak Peek!

Samsung is updating its portable media player with the successor to the Samsung YP-P2, the Samsung P3. The device will be formerly announced in January, joining the media player race alongside the iPod, Toshiba U103 and the non-existant MySpace PMP.

Subtle changes include its rectangular aluminum body and three inch 480 x 272 touchscreen. You can expect it to have Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, FM and many of the other typical photo, audio and video capabilities found in portable media players. Storage capacity will range from 4GB to 32GB with varying prices which will be announced at a later date. Expect this to hit store shelves in early 2009.
