Ambient gadgetry: what’s this pylon doing in my neighborhood?
Not too long ago, this pylon appeared unheralded in my too-quaint neighborhood of tiny, turn-of-the-last-century brick and stucco houses in Boston. It’s not the Bunker Hill Monument. But what is it? Continue reading
Bendy Bicycle
Most city dwellers rely on their feet more than anything, but there are more than a handful that prefer to cruise around their respective hoods on wheels. Most of these bikers you’ll see with backpacks or messenger bags, because when you live a city, leaving your bike parked on the street without a lock and chain is not an option unless you’re a softy for self-torture. The Bendy Bicycle, designed by Kevin Scott (we can only assume his father’s name... Continue reading
Corner Communication Warning Sign Saves You From Unsightly Collisions
If you’re neurotic like me and always have to peek around a corner to make sure someone else isn’tĀ barrelingĀ their way in your direction, then a system like the Corner’s Communication Warning Sign is a welcome addition to city streets. Designed by Sanghoon Lee, the Warning System uses sound sensors to determine when someone is approaching the corner and manages the corner’s traffic using a system similar to street lights. Red means stop. No light means it’s safe to continue around... Continue reading
Periodic Table of Elements Taxis and Buses
These awesome Periodic Table of Elements Taxis and Buses serve as mobile advertisements for the Oxford Science Park in the U.K. I wonder if one of these bad boys will go up for sale after they’re done with the marketing scheme. A ride like this would go perfect with a set of Periodic Picnic Tables.
Urban Jewelry
What would you do if you discovered a pair of earrings bigger than your car lying on the streets of your city? Would you be amazed or scared that a fashionable giant was about to trample you?
Spray Can Stool Provides Proper Seating for Vandals
The “Cap” Spray Can Nozzle Stool is an awesome ode to the purveyors and enthusiasts of graffiti. Designed by Don’t Feed The Swedes, this rad seat is a stand-alone piece of pop art all on its own. Slap a few Andy Warhol posters on your wall and you’ll be stylin’ like Kanye.
Beautiful Garbage: Philly Pimps Their Garbage Trucks With Murals
Philly’s Mural Arts Program partnered up with The Design Center of Philadelphia University to transform 10 city garbage trucks into pieces of movable art. Sadly, the murals do nothing to disguise the trucks awful fucking smell. Just think about this… millions of week old cheese steaks rotting in the sun. But hey, it’s something pretty to look at as you vomit into the gutter. Hit the jump for ghetto children proclaiming their love for all things flowery and purple.
Knitta Please: Urban Knitting Graffiti
As much as I would hate to share a hobby with my grandmother, this urban knitting graffiti project, Knitta Please, is almost cool enough for me to take up knitting. I said almost cool enough. A whole tree covered with a surface which resembles that scarf your aunt made you that one year. Now that’s taking crafting to a whole new extreme. Take the jump to see some more awesome examples.
Prankster Screws with Crosswalk LEDs
This has to be one of the best street pranks ever. Spotted on the streets of Manhattan, some urban prankster had the ingenious idea of altering the “stop” hand of a traditional crosswalk light to resemble a hand flipping the bird instead. Want to cross the street? Fuck off! No really, just go away. Viva las vandalism! This is so New York City. Link [via]
