Facebook Overtakes MySpace

mysapce-vs-facebook-may-09

The social media war has finally come to an end. We all know that MySpace has been declining in popularity and use since 2006 and since then, has only been beating out Facebook in US-based traffic. Now, Facebook has overtaken MySpace, according to Comscore. The exact results? For May of 2009, Facebook actually passed MySpace with 70.278 million unique visitors compared to MySpace’s 70.255 million. So close, but I think we can officially declare the ‘Book the winner of the social networking wars.

Thank You

Just wanted to give you guys, our beloved readers, a big thank you. We had our best month ever for traffic in April and we’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished. So from all of us at Gearfuse, even the french-speaking one, thanks for visiting and tell all your friends how much you love us and all that jazz.

MySpace Founder: Facebook Beat Us

googletrends

Say it ain’t so! Brett Brewer, the guy who formed MySpace parent company InterMix Media and later sold it to News Corp., says that Facebook will dominate the social networking war on a worldwide scale. Facebook’s traffic is already overtaking MySpace and MySpace’s appeal is dying by the week. But it’s not just Facebook that Mr. Brewer focuses on:

But Mr Brewer, who has left the company to set up an online ad network that deals with both companies, also warned that Facebook is likely to be usurped as the king of social networking sites within two years by another entrant which will most likely pop up with better user functionality for mobile phones.

Brewer sounds spot on. Mobile phones are king in 2009 and if you’re not using a top-tier cellphone (iPhone 3G, Blackberry, G1, etc.), you might as well become a recluse. I see something similar to Twitter and Facebook taking over the web and mobile phone markets by storm in 2010-2011. What do you think? Do you prefer MySpace or Facebook?

Mario Kart: For Real

Meet Remi Gaillard. He’s a real Italian plumber (except he’s French). The kind that drives a go-kart in live traffic, throwing banana peels at those trying to pass him by in an attempt to thwart their course. Yes, this man is playing Mario Kart for real. A hilarious video that’s well made and fun to watch. Don’t miss out.

Get Ticketed, Get A Free Headset

If a cop pulls you over for nothing more than driving while calling work to let them know you’ll be a little late, don’t piss yourself just yet. Just because you’ve been ticketed for a traffic violation involving cellphone use whilst driving doesn’t mean you’re in the shitter just yet. You might be able to get a free Bluetooth headset out of it.

Like the Google Prius, you can laugh in a cop’s face. But, not because you work for a multi-billion dollar company that’ll take care of the ticket for you but because Headsets.com is giving away free headsets to anyone caught driving while on their cellphone. A free Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth headset for, depending on what state you’re in, a hundred dollar ticket, sounds like a steal. Take it over to Best Buy to get it set up for $10. Now, that’s a steal.

Breaking: Comcast To Be Punished By FCC

This is just coming off the wires but it appears the FCC is going to punish Comcast for the way it has been handling its ‘net traffic. As you may recall, Comcast has been at the center of an argument over whether or not it has the right to throttle Bit Torrent traffic. The FCC claims that by doing this, it’s violating the FCC’s principles of protecting consumers access to the Internet.

Remember, this is the same Comcast that sabotaged a public hearing and offers shit Internet service. And look what they’re still spewing:

Company spokeswoman Sena Fitzmaurice on Thursday denied that Comcast blocks Internet content or services and that the “carefully limited measures that Comcast takes to manage traffic on its broadband network are a reasonable part” of the company’s strategy to ensure all customers receive quality service.

It’ll be awhile before Comcast is fined and forced to give us back what is rightfully ours (The Internet), so don’t go holding your breath in excitement. This is just one step in the right direction towards freedom on the Internet.

Google Street View Prius Pulled Over

Our favorite itch to scratch, John Brownlee, brings to our attention a photo found on Flickr. It features a red Toyota Prius being pulled over by a police officer on a motorcycle. This isn’t any regular Prius though, this is the Google Street View car that takes all those lovely pictures for Google Maps!

Considering how huge that camera mount is, it doesn’t surprise me too much. I can’t help but wonder if the cop actually ticketed Google. I mean, isn’t Google above the law? They probably offered him an invite to Google’s latest secret: Google Cops – a new search engine that helps search for donut shops in a three-mile radius.

CTIA survey shows USA texting traffic doubled in 2006

Avoid_texting_while_driving_1.jpg

Text and SMS messaging has become a phenomenon with teenagers and adults alike. These days, it’s impossible to walk through a public place without bumping into someone aimlessly typing on their phones, or to have a peaceful dinner without a beeping text notification. So the news that texting traffic nearly doubled in 2006 is not much of a surprise. The wireless data service scheme is now a $15.2 billion industry. Time speant talking on the phone is also up 20%. Say goodbye to human-to-human interaction. Yay! — Andrew Dobrow
