Air-Purifying Concrete Is Not Green In Color

The Dutch town of Hengelo is putting certain concrete paving stones to the test. These said stones contain a titanium dioxide-based additive that, when under the influence of sunlight, bind the nitrogen oxide particles emitted by car exhausts and turns them into harmless nitrates. They plan on measuring the air quality after paving one half of a road with the air-purifying concrete and the other half with the ordinary variety.

Air purification isn’t all this new concrete is capable of, however. It may look like the same old cement but it also repels dirt off the road, providing a smoother driving surface. If only this concrete could cure SARS. It’ll be another year before the tests become conclusive and with the way gas is these days, we’ll all be cutting our cars in half instead of driving on air-purifying concrete.

Blu-Ray does Mac, just not by Apple

bluray.png

FastMac recently announced its release of an external Blu-Ray player for the Mac OS X, beating out Apple to the punch of integrating Blu-Ray into the Mac infrastructure. This could be a huge advantage for Blu-Ray over HD DVD now that Mac users will happily have the capability to watch their favorite Blu-Ray movie.

The Blu-Ray drive upgrade will allow for a 1x BR-RW burn speed, and will also allow for 8x DVD-RW. It comes bundled with the award-winning Toast 8 Titanium software and includes one 25GB Blu-ray rewritable disc so you can get started on the double. Though, this technology won’t come cheap. The FastMac Blu-Ray Player is available now for $799.95. — Andrew Dobrow

Hautlence HL Watch looks like something out of a cartoon

Hautlencehls05.jpg

We half expect a big metal arm to eject out of this watch and suck us inside or something into its alternate universe. Independent Swiss brand, Hautlence, unveiled their newest design. The HL line carries such features as mechanically visible retrograde minutes and a jump hour display which has a blurred overlay until the correct number fills the screen.

The casing is available in a choice of titanium 88, white gold, and pink gold. Inspector Gadget has already ordered his. If you buy this watch and start having anvils fall dangerously close to your head, we’ll be forced to say “told ya so”. — Andrew Dobrow

Romain Jerome Watch made from Titanic remains

titanic

Romain Jerome is taking notes from fellow watch designers Krone, and starting to base a series of watches based on iconic events in history. The first model in the series is the Titanic DNA watch. The watch is made of oxidized steel from the remains of the Titanic, and titanium from the future Titanic II being constructed at Harland and Wolff shipyards in Belfast.

The watch runs off of a Joux-Perret 8235 with a 42-hour power supply surplus. The hands of the watch symbolize the boats anchor, while the black faceplate references the coal pulled up from the wreckage. The watch is meant to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Titanic tragedy in 2012, when the Titanic II is set to be ready for its maiden voyage. — Andrew Dobrow

Braceface? No, a titanium bristled toothbrush

metal tooth brush

So what do you think of when someone mentions metal in your mouth? Headgear? Braces? Or a toothbrush? This is about the latter.

The TiFinity toothbrush uses titanium bristles to clean your teeth and last for an extremely long time. This toothbrush has a lifespan of 2 years! So what do you pay for a toothbrush that lasts for 2 years? $50. Sounds expensive, and it might be depending on how much you spend on nylon toothbrushes every year. One really cool feature (which is partially why it lasts for 2 years) is that it is impermeable by water, so there isn’t that immense ammount of bacteria that you are/aren’t used to. –Nik Gomez
