Second Generation Drobo Improves Performance And Spank Bank

For the past few years, I’ve run out of storage space on my PC for all my pornography media files.  It’s a total bummer, considering the rest of my processes have to suffer due to a lack of porn-holding storage space.  The good news is that Data Robotics has launched the second-generation model of its award-winning Drobo enclosure. FireWire 800 alongside improved USB 2.0 performance and an upgraded core processor make the next-generation Drobo more efficient at managing and storing digital information than a 150GB hard drive chock full of porn.

Regular hard drives just don’t cut it anymore. They aren’t expandable and most don’t have anywhere near 16 TB of data storage. For those who find themselves managing vast amounts of porn data and can’t afford to sacrifice performance, the Drobo is an ideal way to solve your masturbation data problem.

Half Terabyte Holographic Disks: Bringing The CD Back?

Sony researchers have been working on 20 layered optical disks that can hold up to half a terabyte of data. Using holographic techniques, these disks could serve as external drives all their own, offering 500 GB of storage on a standard disk by 2010 (enough to back up most PCs.)

While various companies have been working on similar methods, Sony’s version relies on shining light on both sides of the disk simultaneously, creating interference patterns on the disk being written to, each pattern representing one bit of data. — Andrew Dobrow

8 Core Mac Pros now available!

Finally a confirmation on the heavily rumored 8 core Mac Pros. Today on the official Apple website, Jobs and friends finally announced the availability of the uber-exciting 8 Core Intel Xeon. This monster is going to have a storage capability of up to..get ready…3 TB! That’s right, 3 whole terabytes. As Apple says with the announcement “consider the bar raised” and we whole heartily agree.

The new Mac Pros will also be capable of holding 16GB of memory, which you’ll probably need if you’re planning on terabyte technology, and also to keep up with the 8 core processing speed. If you add all the goods and want a fully stocked Mac Pro, it’ll cost you a meager $13,118. — Andrew Dobrow

Dell, Alienware shipping terabyte drives

This week, Dell and subsidiary gaming computer company Alienware began shipping 1-TB hard drives in select desktop PCs. The addition of terabyte technology is now available for the XPS, Aurora, and Area-51 desktops. A TB of storage on the Area-51 is available for $320 added on to the normal price.

“Digital content use is exploding in the consumer market – with this 1TB hard drive, a lifetime of memories, music and other information can be made, stored and shared with others,” said Neil Hand, vice president, worldwide consumer marketing consumer product group, in a statement. “This type of capability used to be available only to the largest corporations. With the spectacular advancement in hard drives and the engineering in our systems, we’re now able to bring it to consumers.”

With a 1TB hard drive, you could even set up a makeshift time capsule of everything occurring in your life, including all of your possessions and where they are located. Which means no more last keys. — Andrew Dobrow

Intel makes first eighty core processor for Tera technology

teraflop_chip_1.jpg

For the emerging digital trend of the Terabyte, computer scientists are realizing that if there are going to be terabyte sized applications, theres a need for a processing chip that can handle that amount of information.

The Intel R&D department have made a chip that has eighty, thats right, eighty processing cores. The chip can perform more then a trillion operations at once time. And we thought quad core processors were exciting?

The chip is the first to ever display Teraflop performance. Enough processing speed and power to control terabytes of information at a time. Don’t have yourself a coronary now. We know it’s exciting, but as it is still in reasearch and development, we still have some time to wait to see these in common operation.

Even more impressive? The entirety of the chips cores fit in a space smaller then a fingernail. While also using less electricity then most home appliances. Ahh, the wonders of technology. (more…)

1TB hard drive from Seagate? Now you can pirate more!

seagateFour! That’s how many patters the new Seagate hard drive will have when it comes out in the first half of 2007. Why four? Well, right now there is 250GB of storage per platter (which is why the three platter disks are maxing out at 750GB), and this new hard drive is planned to be an entire terabyte. That’s right, 1TB for your media storage needs. So, is it going overboard? Definatly not. As longs as the hardware works and there is a demand (which there is), there should be no reason why it shouldn’t be produced. As hard drives get bigger and media quality (and file size) is skyrocketing, one of the biggest restraints on us is the speed with which we can transfer this data. Whether over the internet, or from hard drive to hard drive, transfer speeds need to get a kick in the pants. This new 1TB hard drive is said to feature a rugged, shock-absorbing design and be fairly quiet. That’s to safeguard your data just in case you happen to die on your favorite game and kick your computer. No pricing details, but it will probably be (and logically should be) well under the cost for two 500GB hard drives.
