Chinese Man Who Created DIY Submarine Out of Oil Barrels Makes Water Debut

homemade-submarine1

Using nothing more than two years, $4,385, and some good ole hard word and ingenuity, China native Tao Xiangli created his DIY Submarine. We like to keep up to date with people and objects we’ve written about in the past so it’s our honor to let you know that the DIY Sub made its water debut on September 3.

Made from discarded oil barrels, the sub includes a periscope, depth control tanks and electric motors. Despite the small budget, he seems to get around pretty easily.

A World’s First: Solar Submarine

When one thinks of a submarine, solar energy is the furthest thing from their mind. After all, submarines dive down deep below the ocean’s surface where the sun does not shine. The Swiss energy company, BKW is a little more optimistic than myself. It’s unveiled the GOLDFISH project, which will feature the world’s first solar powered submarine.

How will they do it? How could they possibly get the sun to energize solar panels underneath the sea? The answer is quite simple: bring the solar panels to the surface. Duh! A floating solar array that takes on the appearance of a water lily will be capable of producing 30 kilowatts of electricity. Currently, BKW is still looking for investors for this project so that it may begin building it. The project is estimated to cost about $8.85 million. If you’ve got more money than you know what to do with, here’s an investment that could help save the planet and make you look good while doing it.

DIY Submarine – Yes, You Read That Correctly

The Chinese are incredibly smart and tactile. My roommate must be the one exception to the rule, though. I went to brush my teeth the other day and found him building a server rack inside our shower. After some frustration, I skipped that and went straight for the coffee. Sure enough, the coffee maker was rigged with an Arduino and a USB plug. What a commie!

But when it comes to DIY, the Chinese dont fuck around – except for my roommate. I mean look at this dude. He made a one-man submarine from old metal barrels. Who does that? His new pad includes oxygen supply, headlights, monitoring cameras and a TV set. All it needs now is a mini-fridge and a bong for it to become the underwater dorm room.

Hyper-Sub Takes To The Waves (And Under Them Too)

The Marion Hyper-Sub Submersible Powerboat is not your average sea bearing vessel. The Hyper-Sub can operate as both a boat and a submarine, both equally well. And it can look pretty sweet while doing it too.

Creator Reynolds Marion enlisted the help of his mechanical engineer neighbor to help create the schematics for the Hyper-Sub, and as it turns out, the schematics allowed for an awesome design as well. Kinda like the Batmobile on water skis. (more…)
