HP Unleashes New Netbook With Two Flavors

2008 has been the year for netbook madness. Ryan ordered an Acer, my friend John got an Eee PC and now HP is coming out with a new netbook that appears to be quite the offering. The Mini 1000 features a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom CPU, either a 8.9-inch or 10.2-inch display and up to 2GB of RAM. SSD is available in a 16GB drive or you can get a 60GB HDD for more storage. You can, of course, expand your storage via a USB memory stick as well.

As far as the OS goes, you can choose an Ubuntu Linux install that HP is calling the “MIE OS.” MIE stands for Mobile Internet Experience and essentially, it presents you with a bunch of commonly used apps and tasks that looks like an HP TouchSmart PC. Not bad. XP is also available for those looking to go a little more mainstream. The XP version of the Mini 1000 is available today for $399 with 512MB of RAM and an 8GB SSD with the 8.9-inch screen. For $50 more, you can score the 10.2-inch version. Look for the Linux version in early 2009.

Sony Unveils Two Unique Digital Cameras

Sony is known for its Cybershot line of digital cameras. They tend to be priced high and offer fantastic image quality and usability. One thing that’s still odd though is how Sony is still using memory cards for storage. With the price of solid state memory going down and increased storage capacity, the age of the memory card is slowly coming to an end. Enter the Cybershot T700.

It’s super thin at only 16.4mm thick and features a big 3.5-inch LCD. It comes in pink and graphite and each camera packs a bunch of features like face detection, etc. The coup de grace? A whopping 4GB of internal storage so you never need to “lose” a memory card again. On the other hand, if you lose the transfer cable, you’re shit out of luck. Expect the T700 to launch in September.

Hey Michael Arrington! Here’s Your Firefox Tablet!

Looks like a company called Impulse just came out with a laptop that’s perfect for Michael Arrington. It’s called the NPX-9000 and is being touted as “The World’s Cheapest Laptop.”

You have to purchase at least 50 of them, which is exactly what Arrington is looking to do, but you’ll only end up paying $130 a unit. What’s that get you? A 400MHz MIPS CPU, 128MB of RAM, 1GB of solid-state storage, a media card reader for increased storage, VGA output and 3 USB ports. It runs Linux and will include an 802.11g WiFi dongle. That seals the deal for me. Anyone want to go in on a lot of 50 units? You can’t beat the price.
