The Last HOPE: Holy Shit, That’s A Lot of Sliders

On Sunday, nearly all the LEGOs were gone. Needless to say, we were heartbroken, but then we came upon this redeeming build. A construct of White Castle slider boxes. What do you think it is? We have no idea. One thing is for certain, we’re getting a Crave Case for dinner tonight.

Glide Is The Only Toaster You Need

If you haven’t noticed, we’re crazy about toasters. Winner of the Macef/Designboom Ceramics for Breakfast Competition 2007, George Watson has crafted a ceramic toaster dubbed “Glide” using slip molded porcelain. Claiming that there has been “little development of the toaster,” has been Watson’s main drive in crafting this atypical toaster. Just shovel the toast into the feeder to have it toasted, soon to be resting on that rib-cage looking area; a pit stop before it hits your plate.

This is a toaster that brings life and joy to a stagnant domestic appliance, an iconic object for the home.

Hey man, I love toasters just as much as you do. One question, how fast does this toaster toast? I’m impatient.

Spy Pics: SonyEricsson thin 3G candybar and slider due May

se_may.jpg

SonyEricsson is preparing an announcement in May; supposedly at least 2 handsets would be introduced, the Shinobu (above, left) and Nicole (above, right). These devices (and the W580i) would use a modified UI with a reorganization of keys, namely the addition of dial-hang up buttons. We enlarged the original pictures so that you can see the SonyEricsson watermark too, please excuse the pixelation. The 5 megapixels prototype we showed you might not be introduced just yet The messaging device(s) that we also reported might be released in the form of their variants, or at a later date.

Shinobu should be a 12.5mm thick HSDPA slider with a large 2.4″ QVGA screen and a 2megaixels fixed focus camera, it should be retailed at about €430 ($550).

Nicole should be a 13mm thick WCDMA candybar with a 2.1″ 176×220 screen and a 2megapixels fixed focus camera, it should be retailed at about €190 ($240). This could be the first phone released with the Sagem ODM deal. –Sam Chan

Spotted: Sharp HSDPA slider prototype for European market, plus more insider gossips

sharp1.jpg

A lot of Sharp fans are worried because they have not heard any news from Sharp at 3GSM this year, no new models at all apart from minor facelifts. As told by our insider 2 months ago, it’s about time we expect something from the Japanese company. Itmedia spotted this HSDPA (3.6Mbps) slider prototype at the 3GSM Sharp booth, a model that is not even included in the official press release statement. So far specifications are really sketchy, we know that the camera should be a 2megapixel fixed focus (boo!) and the phone should use microSD as external memory. Multimedia functions shouldn’t be bad, podcast is supported and movies can be played in landscape (duh) on the 2.4″ ASV screen. It might also come in colors of cyan, green, yellow, red and black, with matching color in the user interface. From the keypad and the way it is unveiled, we are confident to say that this slider is targeted to the European market. Most of the models shown were plastic mockups, but there were 1 or 2 powered prototypes in the glass box, so our guess is that the phone should be ready by Q3 this year. According to our source, there is also a VGA screened AQUOS phone in preparationapproaching announcement. More pics after the jump.

LG releases yet another phone, the SB190

lg sb190

LG just released the SB190, their next phone in the line-up, to their friends in Korea. LG took into account the popularity of the Chocolate, and so again steered away from flip phones, creating another slider. Sliders are great and all, but after a few months the screen starts to get scratch from everyday wear and tear, and then your once cool slider is now a piece of crap, even if it has specs than all the other phones on the market. Some of the specs on this phone include DMB, GPS, mp3 player, and 1.3 megapixel camera. These specs aren’t really anything special on the SB190, so LG will have to pull out something miraculous to get this thing to sell; if someone is going to buy a slider, they’ll probably go with the slick Chocolate, not this bulky-looking piece of work. Don’t worry, you don’t need to choose yet; you probably won’t be seeing this for a while in the US.

Samsung SGH-Z720 might blow away in the wind

samsung sgh-z720 thinnest hsdpa

It’s only a matter of time until our mobile devices are so thin and light that they begin to blow away in the wind. The new Samsung SGH-Z720 is officially the thinnest HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) slider phone coming in at 13.8mm thick (or thin). In case you care, yes, that is .1mm less than the Motorola RAZR, the current US market trend in thin phones. As wireless transfer speeds are rapidly rising, the HSDPA is able to transfer data at 1.8Mbps. Now time for a feature list: 3 megapixel camera, 2.1-inch QVGA display, microSD external memory support, Google mobile search and Gmail integration, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.  The Google integration is extended into the application menu, not just the ability to access the web pages. This phone is beautiful, maybe not the most original, but it fits perfectly in with the style of phones nowadays. While sliders aren’t the most popular kind of cellphones right now, how thin this is combined with its impressive feature list make this a very promising offering from Samsung.

LG makes calligraphy Shine

lg shine

We’ve all seen the LG Shine (LG-SV420), it’s the full silver metal-brushed slider that has caught so much attention that Samsung decided to copy it. Supposedly, the LG Shine design will be used on GSM phones in 2007, LG hopes to repeat the Chololate sensation. This week LG announced a limited Designer’s Edition to the Shiney slider, with beautiful Korean Hangul Calligraphy engraved at the back. See? You can make something look good without copying the RAZR. Take a look at a video we dug up, showing you the Shine in action.
