Rumor: iTunes 8 Visualizer Is Magnetosphere

We already told you most of the skinny on iTunes 8 thanks to a leak that Kevin Rose posted. Now TUAW is claiming that the “stunning new music visualizer” we’re supposed to see is none other than Magnetosphere. Magnetosphere is hands down the best iTunes visualizer I’ve ever used, which is why I hang onto a DMG file of an older version I got a long time ago.

Word is that Apple bought creator Robert Hodgin’s software and will be incorporating it into iTunes 8. Nothing is confirmed but we shall see later this month…

Kevin Rose Leaks iTunes 8 Information

That smug bastard from Digg, Kevin Rose, has shed some light on Apple’s upcoming revision of iTunes, version 8:

A new source comes forward w/this info: (this is consistent w/everything I’ve heard)

What’s new in iTunes 8

iTunes 8 includes Genius, which makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together. Genius also includes Genius sidebar, which recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don’t already have.

With iTunes 8, browse your artists and albums visually with the new Grid view; download your favorite TV shows in HD quality from the iTunes Store; sync your media with iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (2nd generation), and iPod touch (2nd generation); and enjoy a stunning new music visualizer.

I’m curious to see how well Apple does this “Genius” technology. I have over 105 GB of music. Get to work, Jobs.

I Guess Everyone Drinks Kool-Aid Nowadays

I’ve got a problem and it’s with my former employer Michael Arrington. It’s not a personal problem at all, it’s just that he’s not making sense when it comes to his little Firefox Tablet he’s trying to build. Oh, and be warned - the page is bogged down by a gazillion comments, which brings me to my main point:

Michael Arrington owns a blog network, not a hardware distribution company. I have no doubt in my mind that the man is gifted enough to create a piece of a hardware that’s related to the Internet somehow. My main issue is that TechCrunch thinks its little Firefox Tablet can be manufactured for around $200. Wait a second, did I say $200? Oh right, that’s what was originally said and then changed to $300 later on. So already the price dispute is becoming bullshit.

If the price for the tablet exceeds $400, it’s a pointless effort. You can scoop up an Eee PC, Dell E Mini or iPhone for cheaper and they’ll all do a lot more than just browse Firefox. I know you love web apps Michael, but take a breather for a second and think about all of this.

You claim you want a touchscreen and a built-in webcam all for ~$300? Ridiculous. I assume you’re trying to profit off this - after all, why else would you even go for it? After browsing around, I found 12-inch touchscreens online for around $300. I realize that buying in bulk could lower that, but you’re forgetting the guts of this thing: CPU, RAM, and your 4GB SSD you requested. Bro, for $300, you are not getting this. I don’t care if you go as open-source as possible. There is just no way in hell TechCrunch is going to produce a touchscreen Internet browser to run web applications for $200 $300.

The specs he’s asking for, specifically, are:

Here’s the basic idea: The machine is as thin as possible, runs low end hardware and has a single button for powering it on and off, headphone jacks, a built in camera for video, low end speakers, and a microphone. It will have Wifi, maybe one USB port, a built in battery, half a Gigabyte of RAM, a 4-Gigabyte solid state hard drive. Data input is primarily through an iPhone-like touch screen keyboard. It runs on linux and Firefox. It would be great to have it be built entirely on open source hardware, but including Skype for VOIP and video calls may be a nice touch, too.

Don’t forget the competition from existing Internet tablets like the Nokia N800, Michael.x

Finally, you ask your readers for help in building it. When your product is finished and goes to market, how will these people be fairly compensated for their work? That’s what I really want to know. I could go on and on for hours about this but I think I’ve summed up the flaws in Arrington’s idea quite nicely. Hey, if he succeeds in pulling it all off and shoving it in my face, more power to him. I’d buy a $200 Firefox Tablet.

Rumor: Dell E Mini Notebook For $299 In August

We’ve all seen Dell’s E mini notebook that’s piss small with an 8.9-inch screen but details haven’t emerged aside from specs - until today. Rumor has it that the Dell E is going to ship sometime in August for - wait for it - an astonishing $299. At that price, you’d expect a terrible system but you’ll find decent specs like a 1.8GHz Atom CPU, Linux. On the downside? 4GB of storage, only 512MB of RAM and Linux.

If the specs don’t suit you, fear not: Dell is coming out with a few models, including a premium model that supposedly has a built-in webcam, 1GB of RAM and other features. Either way, if Dell debuts a $299 sub-notebook next month, don’t expect to find them in stock after launch day.

Naive: The Fake Apple Screenshot Roundup

It’s June 9th and Steve Jobs is going to give a lot of geeks a hard-on today. The big rumor spreading around the web is that a 3G iPhone will be released and while I don’t doubt this at all, many sites have been publishing fake Apple photos left and right.

Let’s take a look at some of the photos and we’ll explain why they’re fake:

Apple Considering The Move To Intel iPhone Chips?

They’ve done it before and they may do it again according to DigiTimes insiders. Rumor has it that Apple is targeting Intel’s Moorestown Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform for the iPhone which promises ten times the power efficiency than current mobile chips. That could mean better battery life and smaller form factors for future versions of the device. Presumably, these iPhones would be available sometime after 2009 when the chipset is slated to be officially released.

It may only be speculation at this point but a move like this would undoubtedly please consumers given the fact that it would better integrate the iPhone with Apple’s current lineup of Intel based desktops and laptops. — Sean Fallon

What The Hell Is The iPhone Extreme?

Apparently a product named the “iPhone Extreme” has been spotted in the HTML code of one of Apple’s iPhone related pages. Naturally this has led to speculation on some sort of iPhone upgrade product. There is no concrete information to substantiate such a claim - but let’s hope that if Apple does have a new product up their sleeve, they have better sense than to name it something as cliche as “Extreme.” — Sean Fallon

Insider: More Sharp phones coming out of Japan

sharp 910sh

Sharp phones are famous for their hardcore cameras and beautiful ASV displays. The Sharp 903 came out at the right time and still managed to produce the best picture quality off mobile phone cameras. (The only GSM/UMTS phone out in the market that can beat Sharp 903 would be LG’s 5MP KG920) Earlier Sharp brought us a low-end straight bar and a mid-range 770 folder. Disappointing. So what’s next? According to our sources, who managed to predict the Toshiba TX80 announcement correctly, Sharp is well planning 2 phones to be released outside Japan, one should come from the 8xx series; as for the other, our source refused to comment. Is it going to be our dream 5MP CCD 3x Optical zoom premium 910SH super phone? We don’t know; all we know is that there should be an announcement soon.

Can this be SE’s first DVB-H Bravia phone?

se dvb-h bravia

We all love rumors, and Esato is one of our favorite sites because usually the rumors there are well challenged before the critical crowd will buy. Anyway, here is the first picture (ever, to our knowledge) that may possibly be the real SonyEricsson DVB-H phone in works, with the Bravia brand name. Right now it smells a bit M600-ish and Samsung-ish. Too bad the screen doesn’t look like the 16:9 3″ screen we are dying for, and apparently this should be a slider rather than a swivel. Some sources postulated that this might simply be a “general prototype” for showcasing in upcoming exhibitions. At this point nobody can really confirm whether the picture is legit or not, guess we’ll just have to sit back and wait. — Sam Chan

iPod dock in new Apple keyboard?

apple keyboardEveryone’s favorite Apple rumor site, ThinkSecret, is claiming that Apple is prepping a new USB keyboard with a built-in iPod dock. Of course, the sources were unable to see the keyboard, but they heard of it being spotted in the wild by customers who sent their keyboards to Apple for replacement. Though the number of keyboards is supposedly less than ten, it is believed that they have been taken back by Apple. Though it seems far-fetched, Apple did force customers who received the replacements for their G4 Cube systems to sign non-disclosure agreements. But I mean come on, this is a keyboard. ThinkSecret believes that this peripheral should be expected around MacWorld, as well as the iPhone, but have a USB peripheral does go against Apple’s new bluetooth accessories. — Zach Wilt
