R2D2 Boombox Brings The Jams, Wookies

030309finalframejpg

R2DJ, RJD2, R2D2 – whatever your poison, you gotta respect the original droid. This boombox is crafted to look like R2D2, except there’s no midget inside controlling it. Unfortunately, it’s a non-working model, effectively shattering your dreams of a Death Star breakdance competition.

R2D2 Soy Sauce Bottle

When you head out to a Japanese resturant, sometimes the little bottles restaurants have to hold the soy sauce resemble little robots. I half expect them to walk across the table and pour themselves. And what robot is more appropriate to have a themed soy sauce bottle for than R2D2, the lovable droid from Star Wars.

Not only was he immortalized in a promotion by the postal service as the R2D2 mailbox, but now he might be popping up at a sushi bar near you. You can even grab your own for $18. — Andrew Dobrow

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi! You’re our only mailman!

We were pretty psyched to get an early peek at the R2D2 mailboxes that the USPS distributed through the U.S. to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the series, along with Star Wars themed postage stamps. Some creative Flickr user decided to make the best of the themed boxes and scored some interestingness points on Flickr because of it.

Sheer genius! Next we need to see a bitch fight between the R2D2 mailbox and a C3PO phallic toting trading card. — Andrew Dobrow

Star Wars stamps continue the USPS campaign

starwarsstamps_1.jpg

Before their emergence into public use, we told you about R2D2 mailboxes celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Wars. To continue the commemorative campaign, now emerges the Star Wars stamps to go along with the mailboxes. The official Star Wars stamp series comes with 15 different designs, all featuring familiar faces from the movies.

And if that wasn’t nerdy enough, there is a poll being held at the site for USPS Jedi Master to choose the favorite stamp design, which will be featured on its own sheet once the poll is over. We voted for the Yoda stamp. We’ve always held a place in our heart for the little old green guy. So far, there has been 25,164 votes cast with 55 days to go. You can expect much more. — Andrew Dobrow

R2D2 Mailbox spotted in the wild

r2d2_4

About two weeks ago we reported on these R2D2 themed mailboxes in honor of Star Wars’ 30th anniversary being celebrated this year. Following-up on the story, like the well balanced journalists that we are, here are some photos of the droid R2 units being used in the wild, rather than sitting in a depot waiting to be placed. We believe these were seen in Washington D.C. It’s cool to see them out in the playing field. Much like collectible stamps, perhaps mailbox containers will be the next widely used USPS service. — Andrew Dobrow
