Apple Might Be Blocking Push Notifications for Jailbroken iPhones

iphone_push

Word on the street is that Apple might be, and likely is, intentionally blocking push notifications on iPhones which have been jailbroken. The developers of the application Push-based reminder app NotifyMe have been getting an enormous amount of complaints from their 5% customer base which has hacked the iPhone in someway.

As it turns out, NotifyMe figured out that the reason the app wasn’t working correctly for these users was because they were being denied access to Apple’s Push Notification Server (APNS). Major cockblock. Understandable, but still, cockblock. Especially when it’s screwing with legit applications such as NotifyMe.

First iPhone Push Applications Take Root

Back when the iPhone 3.0 OS was first announced, one of the biggest features was that applications would feature push notification. Since the iPhone lacks multitasking, this would allow a program to act like your email and push updates/IMs/messages to your phone without it actually being active. Last night, AOL released the OS 3.0 version of AIM and we’re all very excited here at Gearfuse. Push IM is something I’ve longed for, especially since I’m always communicating via AIM. Both the free and paid versions have it and so far, it works pretty well. In the coming weeks, I’d expect to see a lot more push apps available.
