Dual-boot Linux On Your PS3

Filed under: DIYs, Gaming, Hacks, Software

Popular Mechanics has a must-read guide up for PS3 owners alike. If you’ve been interested in putting Linux on your Playstation 3 and need a little help getting things done, then this guide was made for you. You’ll end up replacing the hard drive and gaining the ability to dual-boot between Linux and the PS3 OS, allowing for open-source computing and powerful gaming.

The hard drive swap is optional, but it’s highly recommended by PopMech. Personally, I feel that a 60GB or 80GB model will do just fine. After all, it’s a console, not a personal computer. Put those Cell processors to good use and throw a copy of Ubuntu on your PS3. You wouldn’t want to upset two sets of fanboys at once, would you?

Rainbow Six PS3 Takes You For A Trip Down The Vegas Strip

ps3_rainbow_six_vegas.jpg

What happens in Rainbow Six, stays in Rainbow Six, or at least Tom Clancy would have us believe. With decked halls of LEDs illuminating the Rainbow Six Vegas strip, the PS3 is cleverly disguised as a high rise casino.

We’ve seen some pretty elaborate console mods in our day, including one soaked in fake (we assume) blood, but this is a design which takes the PS3 and makes it into something new altogether. When we first saw it we had no clue what the heck it was. (more…)

Sony Confirms $399 PS3 Coming to US, Outsources Chipmaking to Toshiba

It was only a matter of time before Sony announced that the cheaper, stripped down European version of the PS3 would make its way to the States–and it appears that today was the day. Specifically, the official announcement revealed that a 40GB PS3 with half the USB ports, no multi-format card reader, and no backwards compatibility will be available in the US starting on November 2nd for $399. This will coincide with a price drop on the 80GB PS3 from $599 to $499.

It’s probably unnecessary, but if you have ever thought about water-cooling your PS3, Dragonpower has scattered details of this build over a thread at the Official Playstation forums. If you can do it, and you don’t mind massively voiding your warranty, a PS3 that runs silent and around 32°C under a heavy load could be your reward. Hit the jump for more pictures of the build.

PS3 living large in Russia

ps3ad_1.jpg

This PS3 ad seen in Russia proves Sony’s drive to improve world wide sales. This thing is huge. The billboard displays a straight message. It reads, translated from Russian “Playstation 3: The gaming spaces of Russia”.

For such a vast country, we guess you need a vast ad campaign. And Sony seems to be pulling out all the stops. (more…)

Get that right, PS3 is made in Koera, not Korea nor Japan!

koera_ps3.jpg

This is no April’s fool joke, but the above picture shows a real product label of a device named PS3 that is made in the mysterious country of Koera. Strangely enough there is also an IMEI code. Jump to find out more.

BREAKING: Sony PS3 Firmaware list is a fake!

yousuck_1.jpeg

We were all pretty excited yesterday to find a supposed “leak” of the PS3 2.0.0 Firmware update list. Our excitement was squelched even faster than it arrived. Forum user and supposed leaker, Leah, confirmed today that the PS3 leak post from yesterday was a spoof from some unknown bastardly source.

Is their conspiracy in the air? That list seemed way too specific to be a fake. Maybe Sony threatened to take her to court or too amputate a limb or something. Or maybe we’re just still dreaming that it’s true. — Andrew Dobrow

The announcement of Tony Hawk Proving Ground by Activision is pretty exciting. The game looks like it will be pretty groundbreaking in the action sports genre. For the first time, gamers will be able to define their own character, including their story and style, based on the in-game decisions they make. The new Hawk will also feature a video editing tool to create “epic skate videos”.

Tony Hawk Proving Ground will also contain online play were users can create their own Skater Lounge while grinding out with fellow gamers. Proving Ground is currently under devlopment by Neversoft for Xbox, PS3, PS2, Nintendo DS and Wii and is expected to be released later this year. More screens after the jump. (more…)

Laugh of the Weekend: The PS3 Elite

I must say, I’m usually not a fan of G4 and their gaming obsessed attitude, considering it’s supposed to be a tech channel and not a “lets watch people play games” channel. But with this PS3 Elite mock ad they made, they’ve won a place in the coveted “Laugh of the *enter time span here*” title from Gearfuse.

I love how it’s made to look like a cheesy infomercial. Do we hear Sony’s lawyers on the run? CRAZY DIRTY! I will give them this. Sony sure has been taking notes from other companies recently. — Andrew Dobrow

Leaked screens of PS3 Home, sweet home

Sony has launched their beta of the social virtual world, PS3 Home. Home seems to be a lot more serious and developed then I ever thought it would be. Some things you can do while cruising around home is interact with your PSP, play mini-games, interact with other gamers, and of course, check out the view of a whole new world.

Is this an attempt by Sony to beat Nintendo at their own Mii game? You bet it is. The leaked screenshots from the Home beta are looking really good. Nintendo, we love you, but Sony may have you beat with this one. (more…)
