Video Review: Netflix PS3 Instant Streming Disc

Today is the day, baby. Most of you who reserved a PS3 Instant Stream disc will be receiving yours today. I happened to be one of the lucky ones who got their hands on a disc a littler earlier in the day so I’ve taken the liberty of reviewing the disc for those of you who were still on the fence about going through the trouble of reserving your own copy.

The whole process is pretty seamless. The first time you pop in the disc you’re required to go through a very simple activation process, but after that you’re home free. The cover flow UI is easy to navigate after you get used to the slightly clumsy square-button led navigation. The quality is MUCH better than I expected, almost reaching DVD quality and definitely out pacing both my PC and my Mac.

Enough of my pandering. Check out the video and see for yourself!

Noby Noby Boy Hat and Scarf

nobynobyhat1

Your favorite ravenous worm-thing of the moment, Playstation’s version of The Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar, Noby Noby Boy, wasn’t quite our bag when we checked it out a few months. It’s a nice little game if you happen to be drunk and lazing around on the couch, but probably not worth the $5 it costs.

If you’re a bigger fan of the game than we were or just love any type of gaming wearable, this Noby Noby Boy Hat and Scarf could be pretty cool. Let the Noby monster munch on your head for a little bit. You know it’s big enough.

K-Mart Leaks PS3 Price Reduction and New PS3 Slim

kmart-ps3-slim

I’m not quite sure if this is intentional or one of the most bonehead moments in gaming release history, but either way K-Mart has mysteriously let slip some critical information about Sony’s future console releases and plans.

Displayed on the K-Mart front page was an ad for a “new low price” and a “new exciting” PS3. Soon after the discovery of the front page leak, it was discovered that K-Mart also had listed the Sony PS3 Slim for pre-order at $299, scheduled for a August 24, 2009 release. Whoops?

UPDATE: This info has been confirmed, thanks to an official announcement from Sony at Gamecom.

PlayStation Controller Paperclip Bookmarks

playstation-controller-bookmarks_1

Any PlayStation junky is all too familiar with the four standard buttons on the PS controllers. These Paperclip Bookmarks take the four iconic symbols and place them on the inside of your book’s pages.

There’s no better way to catch a gamer’s eye than to place symbols that remind him of gaming in random places around the house. The only issue is that these bookmarks might inspire you to read less and game more. Not that that’s too much of a problem.

Op-Ed: A Case For The PlayStation Network

final-fantasy-vii-cast

Lately, I’ve been playing my PS3 quite a bit. But aside from UFC 2009: Unleashed, I haven’t been playing titles built for the system. No, I’ve been dropping $5 or $10 here and there and replaying classic PSOne titles. For $9.99, you can download games like Resident Evil: Director’s Cut and Final Fantasy VII and play them in all their glory with significantly decreased load times thanks to the PS3’s hard drive.

There’s plenty of old school titles available for download on PSN. And to boot, they’re cheap, fun and there’s a broad selection of gaming genres to choose from. If you’ve been bored with your PS3 as of late, may I recommend downloading a few of these classics? It’s like reliving the 1990s all over again.

Final Fantasy Tactics Coming to PS3, PSP

fftactics

Call me biased, but my favorite game for the original PlayStation is Final Fantasy Tactics. You can imagine my excitement when I read that the ESRB has rated Tactics for release on PSN. It’ll be available for download for both the PS3 and PSP and I’m guessing it’ll be priced around $9.99. The real question is, will they fix the job point glitch that can be found in the original version?

Deals: $350 Playstation 3 on Amazon

80gbPS3

If you’ve been holding out for a price cut on the PS3, today is your chance to take advantage of Amazon’s PS3 deal. $350 nets you an 80GB system with a DualShock controller. Sorry, no motion control here, folks.

Games? You’ll need to get those on your own, but considering the deals Amazon has on its Marketplace, it shouldn’t be too hard to pick up a couple of classic titles on the cheap.

Heavy Rain Is Shaping Up Nicely

heavyrain1

The upcoming Playstation 3 title Heavy Rain is going to be a graphical powerhouse. It’ll not only put the PS3 back on the map, but it’s supposed to be a pretty decent game too, according to sites like IGN, Joystiq and the like. These new screenshots seem to back that notion up. With beautiful coloring and a dark, stormy atmosphere surrounding the entire game, Heavy Rain could easily give the Silent Hill series a run for its money. After the jump, two more beautiful shots.
