Macbooks On The Cheap

You’ve already heard all the news that’s sprouted from the latest Apple event. Vince briefly mentioned the new price for the old Macbooks - $999, making it Apple’s first notebook under $1,000. However, is this price cheap enough to pull consumers in?

Many Windows notebooks are priced between $500 and $1,000 dollars, which leaves room for any upgrade deals you want to make. On the other hand, the old Macbooks price dropping to $999 will leave little to be desired considering the new Macbooks are only $300 more. With that, there isn’t much reason to not fork over an extra $300 for the better rig, unless of course you’re really on a budget.

Xbox 360: Now Cheaper and Still Plenty of Fun

What’s this? The price drop for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is official and not exclusive to just the Arcade version of the Xbox 360? Xbox 360 Arcade will now retail for a price of $199.99, the standard 360 console for $299.99 and the Elite for $399.99. This gives the 360 the “cheapest system” title, taking the place of the $249.99 Nintendo Wii.

So, if you get the red ring of death: don’t worry about it. No need to ship it out to Microsoft for them to fix and send back to you six months later. Just drop two hundred on the arcade and slap your hard drive in it and you’re set for Fallout 3 come the end of October.

Yes, Another 360 Price Drop

That’s right, this SKU lookup clearly shows a price change from the old $279.99 price to $199.99 for the Xbox 360 Arcade. Damn, a 360 is almost as cheap as a Nintendo DS. Amazing.  Remember kids, the Xbox 360 Arcade won’t come with a hard drive, so gaming online is a no-go unless you shell out an extra $100 dollars or so to get one. That’s the catch. For a price that cheap, gamers everywhere are going to experimentally cooking their home consoles.

Playstation 3 Price Cut: I’m Waiting For One More

Sony announced Tuesday that it will cut the price of the 80GB version of the PlayStation 3 from $500 to $400 for this fall in an effort to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and to attract “millions of PlayStation 2 users who are on the cusp of upgrading,” Tretton said. However, if you’re one of those said PlayStation 2 users and all you do is play classic game compilations or 2D fighting games, then making the upgrade now holds little favor for your calloused thumbs.

While dropping the 80GB down to the 40’s price, Sony will be discontinuing the 40GB model, forcing would-be customers into a $400 dollar affair. Now, if Sony had kept the 40GB model and dropped its price tag down to $300, that would’ve really showed Microsoft that its got balls. Maybe next year.

The Aftermath: First-Generation iPhone Prices

Now that WWDC is over and a $199 8GB iPhone 3G has been announced for July 11th, are people ready to sell their first-generation iPhones on the cheap? Not yet it seems. We scoped out popular sites like eBay, Craigslist (NYC) and Google Shopping to see if anyone was ready to let their iPhone go for under $200.

Naturally, we don’t expect an exodus of old phones until after July 11th, but here’s what we found so far:

  • 8GB iPhone Unlocked & Jailbroken No Reserve!!! - $299.99 (eBay)
  • I PHONE 8GB JAILBROKEN GPS WIFI WORKS GOOD - $179.00 (eBay)
  • 8GB iPhone - Unlocked - Firmware 2.0 Beta Installed! - $200 (Craigslist)
  • Iphone 8gb UNLOCKED & JAIL-BROKEN - $425 (Craigslist)
  • Apple iPhone (8GB) iPhone - $199.99 (Google Shopping)
  • Apple iPhone (8GB) iPhone 100% Unlocked - $549.95 (Google Shopping)
  • Sorry guys. Looks like the best deal out there is around $200. Might as well keep waiting.

To Trash or Not to Trash Your Printer

    madinkcartz

In this day in age, you can walk into any big-box office store like Staples or Office Depot and pick up a printer for under $75 most of the time. For instance, I was able to procure a Canon all-in-one-style printer last year for $55 on sale. Problem is, after the ink cartridges (which, rumor has it, come only half-filled when you buy a new printer) run dry, you need to shell out the bucks for refills. This is when we must ask ourselves: Is it more cost-efficient to buy a new printer or buy refill cartridges?

BookofJoe has asked just that and lists the Epson C88+ printer as an example. It costs $80 and refills add up to $56. At that price, one has to really think hard about this. After all, you can recycle empty ink cartridges for $3 a pop at select stores like Office Depot. That’s $12 after your three colors and black. Each new printer you buy therefore comes with a $12 refund if you think about it.

So at $56 for refills versus $68 for a new printer with the $12 factored in (using the Epson C88+ as an example), I feel it’s best to just buy a new printer when your ink runs out and help contribute to the piles of shit in our landfills. Much easier.

N95 trashed after a failed relationship and GPS attempt

    trashed_n95.jpg

This is perhaps the first trashed N95 we’ve seen. Some rich dude proudly claimed that he trashed his uber expensive Nokia N95 after breaking up with his girlfriend, other precipitating factors include:

    1. the GPS failed to locate him

    2. the GPRS got disconnected all the time

    3. he’s too angry with Nokia for over-pricing the phone

    4. he’s RICH, b****!
