Doom On An iPhone With TV Out

iPhone developer Steven Troughton-Smith updated his iPhone port of Doom to not only take advantage of the iPhone’s TV-out features but also utilize its touchscreen as an interface for the game. Why he decided to display the game on an old monochrome Apple II monitor is beyond me. We get it, Steven: you love Apple.

For now, there are no plans for adding TV-out to the public Doom build for the iPhone, although Steven says that he’s open to investigating the possibility. We just wanted to show you in order to get your hopes up and maybe encourage you to drop Steven a line persuading him to do what we all know is right.

Melting Man Raises Global Warming Awareness

Upon first glance you’d think this guy was just some panhandler who was a little late on Halloween but, in truth, he’s loitering for a good cause, fighting the good fight.

It’s a member of the Argentinian Red Cross exercising some guerrilla marketing to raise awareness of global warming. It’s so hot outside he’s melting. So, do something about it before we all suffer the same demise.

Trippy iPod Is By No Means Portable

Either I’m on some awesome drugs that I don’t know about or the Russian artists who designed this oversized iPod are. OK, I just gave myself a blood test; I’m sober. That means that both Aristarkh Chernyshev and Alexei Shulgin are out of their skulls for crafting this large, warped, fully-functional iPod.

It looks like they put a giant iPod in a brick oven then, once it was well done, connected some 500 XL speakers to it. I can’t imagine the purpose of this thing besides a conversation piece while you shout over the loud music coming through it. That is, if you can get around the tiring effort you’d have to put forth while simply looking for a song. Count me out.

Would You Like Salt With That?

In Japan, you can find a plethora of unique things that you simply won’t find anywhere else. From vending machines to robots, a lot of products are like ones you’ve never witnessed before. This time around, it’s a spa called Saltasia.

As the name implies, this spa is heavily salt-based. Salt lines each room and is supposed to promote anti-aging and relaxation. Only women can enter the spa and at 105.8 degrees fahrenheit, it’s no chill spot. Plenty of LEDs flash and cover most surfaces while ambient music plays. Sounds more like a chill-out room at a rave but hey, to each her own.

Flash: NYC Stores Out Of iPhones!

Crunchgear’s John Biggs, shown here in a file photo, is reporting that the AT&T store in historic Bay Ridge, Brooklyn is out of iPhones. Other stores are showing low or no inventory in stock. If you can’t wait, you better find that secluded AT&T store on the third floor of the mall. You know, the one next to the pet store.

UPDATE: The Consumerist is saying that AT&T will refund your activation fee for putting up with these long wait times.

Mini Air-Conditioner From Stir Fry

So far, it’s been a hot summer and it isn’t getting much cooler. Do yourself a favor: order some takeout (preferably Chinese food) and turn the carton into a mini-desktop air conditioner. Fueled by ice and powered by six batteries, this air conditioner is simple to build and serves a practical use for sun stroke prevention.

Clearly, it only cools a small space but it beats burning your ass off in the heat of summer.  So, check out this DIY and you’ll be cooling off in no time.

Tip: tackling worn-out Fast Port connectors on SonyEricsson phones

seconn.jpg

The SonyEricsson K750 and W800 are one of the most readily seen phones on streets nowadays, they’re pretty good phones really, the Walkman and camera both work reasonably well. The biggest problem with SonyEricsson phones is that the “Fast Port” (for charger/data/headset connection) is not the most well-designed, since you’re attaching everything to same port, it tends to wear out so much faster than other brands that have separate plugs for headset and power for example. There has been immense discussion over user forums concerning this issue, different people tried different things: alcohol to swab the dust and rust off, or simply buying a new cable; fortunately the Fast Port is improved on newer phones. Earlier today we spotted a pretty smart tip on one of the Chinese forums, and it worked really well with our super worn-out w800i. The trick is to give the 2 delicate spring-metallic flaps (circled above) on the connector some push, once they’re warmed up and bounced back to their original positions, you’re good to go. Try that out and let us know if it works for you too. –Sam Chan
