Cellphone has no buttons to press, but plenty of holes to play with

taranti_1.jpg

Continuing their “design fiction”, which was first shown with The Pebble MP3 Player, nonobject in conjunction with branko Lukic presents their touchless cellphone design, Tarati. The Tarati concept design features no buttons, but holes you pass your finger through to activate the keys.

Tarati “beckons” the user to reach out and touch someone, without having to actually touch the person. Well, whatever that means, we just happen to love the design. — Andrew Dobrow

Slideon.v2: Even more ghostly

slideon_v2_1.jpg

A few days ago we talked about the Slideon concept PMP design and its sleek slider style. With the first version fresh in our minds, the Slideon.v2 improves on the already gorgeous MP3 player.

v2 features a huge wide-screen, which is as big as a normal iPod. The slide design means no obtrusive buttons to get in the way and change the track or volume when it’s not wanted. It features two buttons and a middle slider control, which is touch-sensitive. It’s much thinner than the original concept and all around, much more usable. — Andrew Dobrow

Slideon MP3 Player is ghostly

slideon_1.jpg

With the ever-changing mobile phone market becoming a breeding ground for slider phones, it’s no surprise that a PMP player would eventually be designed in the fashion of the slide design. Hell, Apple’s doing the opposite for the iPhone, right? The Slideon MP3 Player is a concept design from Ian Murchison.

The Slideon is designed to integrate the sleekness of the slide with the portable media crowd, with the controls all hidden under its sleek geometric screen. The Slideon would feature flash-based memory and a battery that can be charged through the headphone jack. (more…)

The Pebble: The MP3 object designed with Mother Nature in mind

nonobject_2007.004_1.jpeg

Nonobject design is paving a path through the design world based on what they like to call “design fiction”. Or in other words, concepts that are pretty out there. The Pebble is a MP3 player themed after nature.

Each would have a totally unique design, with its own contours and off-color areas setting it apart from the other players. Even though the designs would vary, the inner components would stay the same. Imagine a world where such customization would be custom place. How would it change the way we interact with our gadgets? — Andrew Dobrow

Pez MP3 Player is a collector’s dream

pixelicon.png

Please excuse me if I’m gushing, but when a geeky collectible becomes mixed with another tech medium, this is time for me to praise the heavens for blessing us with all this cool shit to talk about. The Pez MP3 player has a 512 MB capacity, which is nothing to really jump for joy about, but hey, it’s a fricken Pez MP3 player!

Sadly, the first edition of the player made, which of there were only 1500 produced, have sold out at their price of $99. You bet your ass we’re going to be scouting eBay to get our hands on one of these. The player also comes pre-packed with a collection of Indie bands music, and we’re not talking The Arcade Fire. We’re talking real independant bands. Also cool is that, unlike the iPod, it plays MP3s and WMA/WMA-DRM files, but not Apple’s m4p. Bummer. — Andrew Dobrow

Sparkling keypad for wearable electronics

chinacoinset_1.jpg

Wearable electronic clothing is nothing new to the tech world, but this is the first time we can recall a company commercially releasing a product specifically made to control your MP3 player through your clothing. The China Coin is a blinking, sparkling wearable control inspired from the old Chinese coins from the Han Dynasty.

The China Coin is 100% washable and is made of a soft polymer for easy integration into clothing. It’s powered directly from your iPod’s battery, so there is no need for any extra battery power, and only uses about 5% of the batteries capacity, which is a small price to pay for a cool lit clothing control device. — Andrew Dobrow

Samsung YA-DS200: The “mobile speaker”

YA_DS200_3_1.jpg

Despite its appearance, the Samsung YA-DS200 is not a cellphone. In fact, it’s a mobile speaker system. Compact and sleek, the 800mW speaker to go has the same design scheme a the Samsung YP-K3 MP3 player and would make an excellent addition to your portable media sound system.

Its LCD screen displays levels of the audio output as you listen. The YA-DS200 Speakers will be available soon in Korea, and than everywhere else soon after. Hopefully. — Andrew Dobrow

MP3 BBQ Grill makes your ears crave beef

memphis2_1.jpg

The Fourth of July is rapidly approaching. Which can only mean one thing. The grills are going to be whipped out for some good old summer BBQ partying. This summer, forget about the boring pansy-boy George Foreman grill. Take a look at this tune playing machine. The Memphis Barbecue combines two of America’s favorite past times, loud rock music and eating charred meat.

For around £230 ($451.77), the Memphis Barbecue is no average man’s grill. Powered by two gas burners, this grill can make even a newly slaughtered cow a piece of coal in minutes. The music plays through its cool 1950’s styled front, and an MP3 player can be hooked up in the back with its integrated plug. Forget the stew, Peggy Sue and brew up some steak! — Andrew Dobrow

Waterproof Dolphin MP3 Player for sea dwelling humans

dolphin

As we posted back in January, Century Corp Japan announced their Dolphin MP3 Player, a waterproof solution to portable media. The Dolphin looks like some sort of medical equipment you would find in a hospital and connects right onto a pair of goggles. The silicon covered 1GB flash drive comes with waterproof earphones, which we would think would also keep water out of your ears. Never did we think The Beatles’ Octopuses Garden would be so realistic. Pick one up for the yen equivalent of $105. — Andrew Dobrow
