Apple Warns Retail Stores of Limited iMac and Mac Mini Inventory; Upgrades Imminent

steve_jobs

Sources are reporting that Apple has sent a memo out to their retail stores across the U.S. stating that “further orders for many of its existing desktop SKUs would go unhonored and that stores should not expect those models to be restocked.”

In other words, we definitely should be seeing some new Apple desktop computers in the coming weeks, potentially days. The same memo states the Amazon has run out of all configurations of the current iMac and Mac Mini models. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more. In preparation for the upgrades, Apple has released this photo of Steve Jobs preparing to thrust your skull as you furiously give his company head.

Taste The Rainbow: Mac Mini

mac_mini_colorsjpg

The Mac Mini is a fantastic computer for day-to-day use or as a media center box for your TV. Problem is, that anodized aluminum finish can look dull sitting next to all your other gadgets surrounding your television. Spice it up a little with a paint job from Computer Choppers. For a whopping $200, they’ll gladly dye your Mac Mini in one of many color options the company offers. While it’s an expensive mod, costing a third of the computer’s original purchase price, the ability the customize your Mac to your style is an attractive offer to some. I’m so getting the pink one when I get my tax return back.

Mac Mini Apple II Case

Apple II. Famous computer. Used one back in 1st and 2nd grade. Ugly as shit, though. That’s why I wonder what someone is doing putting a gorgeous-looking Mac Mini inside an ugly old, dilapidated beige box such as this one. To each his own I guess.

You know, making a case mod from old Apple hardware isn’t a hard task. In fact, take a lap around your local colleges in the summer and watch as they discard hundreds of old iMac G3s, Quicksilver G4s and ugly 21-inch monitors from the 1999-era. All this can be salvaged for parts that you can use on your next DIY project. Just make sure that everything appears to be working normal.

Your mini’s foreign friends

mac mini companion enclosure

Been wanting to turn your Mac mini into a home media center, but don’t have enough storage space for all your movies and music? You’re in luck, as Kuroutoshikou of Japan has announced four new external drive enclosures designed to compliment the Mac mini. Done in the same silver-and-white style as the mini, the enclosures also match the mini’s dimensions, allowing you to stack them. Best of all, these enclosures have room for a full-sized 3.5″ drive, enabling you to pair your mini with one of those 750GB vertical drives.

The GW3.5MM-U2 ($25) connects via USB 2.0 for PATA disk expansion; the GW3.5MM-U2/HUB ($30) adds a 3-port USB 2.0 hub; the GW3.5MM-U2/S ($34) adds support for SATA drives for faster data transfer; and the GW3.5MM-U2/LAN ($51) adds an Ethernet port for network accessible storage. Know which one you want? Hope you’ve got a contact in Japan, because they’re only available there, and not until the end of the month. — Mike Payne
