The Last HOPE: Holy Shit, That’s A Lot of Sliders

On Sunday, nearly all the LEGOs were gone. Needless to say, we were heartbroken, but then we came upon this redeeming build. A construct of White Castle slider boxes. What do you think it is? We have no idea. One thing is for certain, we’re getting a Crave Case for dinner tonight.

The Last HOPE: Methods of Copying High Security Keys

Filed under: DIYs, Design, Hacks, Household

The Netherlands-based locksporting group Toool held a panel at HOPE discussing new and advanced opening techniques for high security locks. We sat in on this two hour discussion with Barry Wels and Han Fey commenting on some unorthodox approaches to key copying.

The speakers mentioned how easy it is to copy even the most exclusive of key profiles, which in actuality, only block hardware store copying methods. Noting the classic clay mold approaches to key copying, the speakers quickly alluded to the simplicity of imprinting the key’s marks on your own arm as a form of copying. Go ahead and press your house key into your forearm, the imprint stays there longer than you’d think.

They even challenged attendees to bring their own locks or “impossible to copy” keys, so they can take a crack at it. What daring hackers.

The Last HOPE: Capture The Flag

PacketWars had its own project going on the expo floor. Complete with a referee who was ready to smack any hacker who steps out of the line with any shenanigans that violate the terms of service. It’s competitive network combat, no holds barred. Bring your own laptop, plug in and defend your territory.

The Last HOPE: Screen Printing

Filed under: DIYs, Design, Hacks, Wearables

A sign for screen printing was posted in the “Hackerspace Village” when we arrived Saturday. As we stood there watching them make imprints in shirts, they asked us for help (hackers are so friendly!) and well, this helped us get a closer look into how they were making these sweet Darth Vader designs on t-shirts.

The Hacktory was showing off its way of promoting the use of technology in arts. The team there was using discharge glue, which acts like a bleach towards color pigments, forming some cool designs in their name after it’s set to dry. Two of which included Star Wars inspired designs: Darth Vader and a Storm Trooper. $5 t-shirts, free if you brought your own blank one means it was the best t-shirt offer at the Last HOPE Conference. More pictures and the link to their site after the jump:

The Last HOPE: Chill Spot

Needless to say a hacker conference can take a lot out of a geek. That’s why this chill spot was put in. It makes watching the conferences upstairs relaxing, while hanging around in a hammock. If you had a computer you could partake in the humorous messages that would appear at the bottom of the screen displaying the speeches. The folks at the conference provided a web link that turned the hammock chill spot into a slew of comments displayed at the bottom of the screen from anyone using the site. “My ass hurts” and “there is a dildo missing from the art display” were two of the funnier comments made as everyone lounged around fiddling with their laptops.

The Last HOPE: Electronic T-Shirt Design

We came across an interesting display of posters and t-shirts from artist and designer Ray Lam at Iteetoo.com. Ray is inspired by electronic devices and creation and has started reflecting it in some fascinating art he’s designed himself. He has even taken bits and pieces from his abstract art posters and made some clever t-shirt decals for geeks and hackers alike. We are very impressed with his quirky approach towards the fusion of sci-fi and zen.

Club-Mate: The Last HOPE’s Drink Of Choice

Hackers are a different breed of humans. They’re not into vanilla cola or Red Bull energy drinks. They stay away from the mainstream bullshit and rarely leave their router-filled lairs. This is why a drink like Club-Mate (pronounced “Klub Mah-Tay”) is not only the drink of choice here at the Last HOPE Conference, but it’s also a big hit with the hacker crowd in Germany.

We bought one for four bucks, which is a reasonable price considering the size of this thing, but after trying it, we realized we prefer beer. And while the bottle claims it’s an acquired taste with “You get used to it!” printed on the label, we still prefer beer more! Beer is flavorful and makes all the ugly chicks look gorgeous. All the Club-Mate does is pump your body full of caffeine and make you twitch while you hunch over a computer. Like I said, great for hackers.

The Last HOPE: Bloomin’ Dildo

So, we’re at the Last HOPE Conference in New York. The moment we arrived at the Pennsylvania Hotel, we took the escalator upstairs to the showroom floor. We were then greeted by this blossoming solar powered dildo flower thing. Whew, that’s a mouthful, and so are all those dildos!

Glass or rubber, these lamps have it all. Dildos, butt plugs, anal beads and pretty much any love stick imaginable decorate the light, but perhaps most importantly is the center piece.  Surrounded by your typical dildos is the eye popping mega-butt plug. I’d love to meet the girl daring enough to join forces with it.

A combination of steel, LEDs, solar electronics and a sick mind are all Randy Polumbo needed to craft these perverted lamps which are ideal for any bachelor pad. Invite a bunch of your lady friends over and see how many of them can sit on it simultaneously.  It’d be like king of the mountain, except more erotic.
