Finally: Game Boy Inducted Into the Toy Hall of Fame

gameboy

And it’s in good company. Also being inducted to the Strong National Museum of Play’s Toy Hall of Fame this year is the ball. That’s right, the ball.

I always felt the Game Boy never got its true dues. The Game Boy was it. Still is “it” as far as I’m concerned. What other handheld console can you honestly say had more influence on the handheld gaming market than the Game Boy? I rest my case.

Bomb-Damaged Game Boy Amazingly Still Works

They don’t make gaming consoles like they used too. Do you think a PSP would be able to withstand a Gulf War bombing and live to tell the tale? That’s exactly what this Game Boy has managed to do.

Despite being blown into a burnt plastic mess this Game Boy still somehow maintains the ability to trudge along its gaming destiny, still playable and for the most part, surprisingly intact.

Gameboy Cake For the Tetris Fan

nintendo-gameboy-cake-design

Every year around Halloween I go on a serious sugar bender. There’s something about this season that fuels the five-year-old inside of me. The problem is that I can literally look at a slice of cake and gain five pounds.

So while this Game Boy cake looks extra scrumptious with its M&M Tetris design goin’ on, I think I might have to say no to a slice of this delicious creation. Oh… what the hell… om nom nom.

Entire NES Console Built-In to NES Cartridge: No Blowing Required

nes_cartridge_portable

If you’ve been looking for a way to carry all of your old NES games around without having to lug around the entire NES console this project will probably flip your lid.

A clever modder built an NES emulator and a display inside of an old NES cartridge. But that’s not all. Aside from NES, this cartridge is also capable of playing Game Boy games, Game Boy Color games and MP3s.

Two-Sided Game Boy iPhone Skin

game-boy-iphone-skin

We came across Infectious, a site which allows their users to submit there own iPhone skins and lets the other users vote whether the skin is included in their store. It’s sort of like the Threadless of gadget skins. While peeking around the site we came across this awesome Game Boy iPhone skin, complete with a dual sided design.

The home button skin really adds a nice touch to the authenticity. It seems that most of the skins on Infectious feature the two-sided skin design. This Game Boy skin is $14.99.

Airdrop Tetris Tee: Look Out Below!

airdropfulltee

Would life be easier or more complicated if Tetris was played using an airplane? Well, at least we can promise one fact with certainty; it would be a hell of a lot more expensive.

As you all as my witnesses, one day, when I move out of my humble cardboard box, I will play Tetris using an airplane, oh yes, I will play Tetris from an airplane. And don’t worry about casualties. I’ll have the money to pay off their kin. Or at least I’ll have enough money for an delicious automatic weapon.

Game Boy iPhone Pouch Case Reminds You of the Good Old Days

gameboyiphone3

Remember when Bush number one was president, the dust from the fallen Berlin wall had barely settled and a little handheld gadget named Game Boy ruled supreme? The Game Boy iPhone Pouch takes me back to the days of laying in bed for hours, trying to beat my own high score of Tetris.

I’ve been one of those bare back iPhone users. Letting my phone get some air doesn’t seem to have caused much damage, though the awesomeness of this pouchy case is calling my name. Either that, or those voices are back. Maybe I should get my medication dosage checked.

Horizontal Game Boy Clone

horigameboy

Back in the day there were two handheld consoles which ruled all. Game Boy was the vertical colorless classic and Sega Game Gear was the horizontal version of Genesis in your pocket.

While the retro-tastic Horizontal Game Boy clone doesn’t include the color graphics and lithe designs of more modern adaptations, it does provide an alternative perspective of what gaming would have been like, had Nintendo opted for a horizontal form factor. Man, I wish I had held on to my original Game Boy.

Game Boy Camera Revived On The iPhone

gameboy_camjpg

Remember the Game Boy Camera? I do very vividly. You could buy an optional printer and print out all these wacky photos that looked like absolute shit. It also had some mini-games and a sequencer for making beats if I recall correctly. Now the camera that made everyone nauseous is making a comeback on the iPhone. Developer Epicore has released a $0.99 app called GB Camera. It emulates the same 2-bit color scheme and should make for some really cool photos now that you can, you know, share them with people instead of letting them rot on your Game Boy.

The Game Boy Timeline

timelinejpg

Game Boy turned 20 this week! Isn’t that amazing? I remember, specifically, receiving the very first model when I was 3 years old. It came with Tetris and I soon purchased Metroid II and Super Mario Land. The batteries died in minutes, the screen was hard to look at but more importantly, it was a portable gaming monster that kept me occupied for hours upon hours. Gizmodo made a tribute timeline for the bastards, so go check that out and shed a tear.
