Social Media Watch: Time to Be Social

social-media-watch

I’m pretty sure the consensus is that most people don’t need another reminder to use social media sites. They already take up so much of our time. But how could you possibly resist this Social Media Watch, despite the encouragement it provides for procrastinating more important projects.

Featuring all of the major networks, including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and so on. Each of the 12 digits have been replaced with the logos of your favorite networking sites. You can grab yours for about $18.

Vintage Postcards Get a Taste of Science Fiction

scifipost2

There’s nothing that can’t be made more exciting by adding robots and aliens. That definitely includes boring, old vintage postcards.

Flickr user Frano Brambilla uploaded a set of manipulated photos, featuring vintage post card scenes with a little added zesty flavor of sci-fi. There’s nearly 30 of these shots over at Flickr.

Papercraft Taco Trucks

taco_truck

I know, I know. Taco trucks rule. You don’t have to thank me. Thank @likeomg on Twitter. There’s seven different models to print out and fold up on Goopymart’s Flickr page. Too bad you can’t print out miniature tacos and empanadas to go along with the trucks.

Hunch.com Launches

hunchimg

For the past hour, I’ve been playing with Hunch.com, a new online service created by Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake. You essentially ask the site questions, take a little survey and get the answers you want. I found it pretty interesting and answering the questions on the homepage helps others gain knowledge about you. One of the neat parts is that Hunch plans to offer an API in the near future, allowing for some wicked web mashups.

Left 4 Dead Cosplay

l4dshoot

Left 4 Dead is a smash hit, this is true. But the game has been out for awhile. How do you keep the idea of it fresh besides offering up DLC at random intervals? Easy. A photographer goes out with his friends and recreates scenes from the game. This photoset on Flickr has not only some of the most gorgeous photos I’ve ever seen, they really do pay tribute to Valve’s zombie shooter. Check it out or DIE.

Vintage Beer Cans

vintagebeer

Jesus Christ! These are beer cans from back in the day? I thought they were empty canisters of motor oil judging by the crude design and packaging. I bet Lockwasher would love to get his hands on some of these for a project. A guy named Dan sent these into The Dieline and this is what he had to say:

“I have something I thought you all might find interesting. My friend/classmate Dan Becker and I were able to shoot a portion of an extensive beer can collection (2000+ cans) containing cans from the past 70 years or so. We have a set on flicker of 163 cans which was just recently featured on Design Observer.

Said Flickr set can be found by clicking the link below. I love the names of some of these beers. “LITE BEER,” “Cold Spring” and “Acme” all have that vintage ring in the name. Some of these cans are over 70 years old, meaning this is the same kind of shit people drank during the Great Depression. Coincidence? I think not.

Ghost in the Machine: Cassette Art Resurrects Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison

ghost1

Hendrix and Morrison are long gone in body, but their souls live on through their music, eternally playing through radios and iPods across the planet. Not to mention cassettes. There are still plenty of people who rely on the dead technology of cassette tapes to jam out to their old favorites. But listening to music is only a fraction of what can be done with these ancient musical artifacts.

If you have enough time on your hands and enough patience to win a staring contest versus a dead man then cassette art is a clever way at resurrecting the classic musicians of yore, as seen through the Ghost in the Machine project by Flickr user iri5. This awesome Flickr’er took the time to recreate Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison using nothing but ripped-out tape from inside of a cassette. The Hendrix piece is decidedly more awesome in our opinion, but really, come on, it’s Jimi! Plus it doesn’t hurt that Hendrix’s nappy hair was more fitting for such a project. Check out Morrison after that jump. (more…)

Steampunk Ray Gun

3308718431_f00205a57b_ojpg

Not much to say here except for a resounding “WOW.” This ray gun is a steampunk creation that was found on Flickr user Tinkerbot’s photostream. Seems Tinkerbot is all about designing fake ray guns that have a distinct vintage feel. After the jump, a selection of his best works that really put the “punk” back in the already enigmatic steampunk movement.

Flickr Finds: Apple Concepts From 1991

apple_timeband

Buried in the depths of Flickr was a small photo set featuring a Japanese magazine called AXIS. The 1991 issue, preserved in full digital color, talks about Apple’s design at the time and opens discussing regarding several concept products we’ve never even heard of. A wearable Mac for your wrist? The TimeBand. There’s even a wacky portable tablet system that resembles a Wacom tablet mixed with a Mac SE/30.

Why are you still reading this? Get your ass over to Flickr and check this shit out. This is gold!
