Got Extra Eco Tote Bags? Turn Them Into Pillows

throwpillow

Like many of you, I’ve accumulated more eco fabric tote bags than I know what to do with. There is just no way I’d ever buy enough groceries to fill all of these things. So instead of wasting perfectly good fabric, why not use the bags to create something you’ll actually use?

These DIY eco tote bag pillows are an awesome way to recycle your eco-friendliness. The bags might not be made with the most comfortable material, but even sandpaper is managable if stuffed with soft fluff.

PB&J Pillows Are Deliciously Comfortable

made-for-each-other-pillowsjpg

As a college student, I’d like to think I’m the go-to expert on all things peanut butter and jelly. It’s an inexpensive meal that is not only classic, but also delicious. That’s why you should take your leftover birthday money your ‘rents gave you and purchase these handmade PB&J pillows off Etsy. Created by user Diffractionfiber, each pillow is 16″ x 15″ and features a dab of either peanut butter or jelly. And while they won’t spice up your sex life, they’ll make for a great conversation piece for your hipster friends who just learned to knit.

Want your own sandwich? It’ll run you $55 for a set of two pillows.

You Can’t Do That On Television

Know why? Because this is a plush TV set. It’s simply gorgeous. Color test on the screen, white bezel – fantastic. No one knows who made it and no one will ever find out. That’s because Marc Summers has a grudge. A grudge against the world.

Happy Friday.

Knit Touchpad Will Render Clothing More Useful

I’ve always wanted to integrate a touch pad into my clothing and thanks to Hannah Perner-Wilson (aka Plusea), that dream could become a reality. For those not familiar with Plusea, she’s all about wearable computing. Her latest work, the Knit Touchpad, is just like the touchpads we use on our notebooks, except this one is made of fabric.

It works with an anti-static glove that Plusea uses to scale the four corners of the fabric pad. Thanks to her intricate walkthrough at Instructables, this DIY yields a lot of potential for wearable touchpads in the future. I can’t wait to add one to my built-in keyboard pants.

Abandoned to Art: Transforming A Gas Station

The abandoned gas station is becoming more and more commonplace these days as fuel prices continue to climb. Rather than have her local abandoned Citgo look like crap, artist Jennifer Marsh instead decided to decorate the building. With the help of more than 2500 students in 29 states, Marsh covered the entire station with fabrics and connected everything together. Now there’s a colorful landscape on the side of the road instead of a reminder of how much the economy currently sucks.

Caterpillar Watch Thinks It’s A Bulldozer

The standard wristwatch hasn’t changed much in the past few centuries. Design student Nicolas Lehotzky was tired of the vanilla-looking watches of the 21st century. Instead, he has designed three prototype wristwatches to reflect the brand and product values of Caterpillar, Brembo and SRAM.

Most notably is his Caterpillar model which is directly inspired by a bulldozer track and extends it into a faceless watch with a fabric belt. The numbers on it slowly rotate around the entire wrist, with the current hour presented on an elevated platform.  We’ve dubbed it, the “Indian-burn” watch. Guaranteed to leave your wrist sore and blistering.

BMW Gina Is Not Flame-Retardant

BMW’s new concept car ‘GINA Light Visionary Model’ is remarkably innovative. It’s a shape-shifting car covered with seamless fabric stretched over a movable metal frame that allowing the driver to change the car’s form at will. The fabric is water resistant and durable. However, setting fire to it is a different story.

There are no plans for the fabric-enveloped car to hit production lines:

“It is in the nature of such visions that they do not necessarily claim to be suitable for series production,” company officials said in unveiling the car Tuesday. “Rather, they are intended to steer creativity and research into new directions.”

Perhaps this concept will inspire more alternative eco-friendly automobiles to hit production lines in the next few years. We’re all hoping that in the event of a crash, automobiles like Gina won’t leave you in a mangled heap of charred flesh and fragmented bones.

Gigantic Fabric Keyboard

fabric_bigkeyboard

With a design reminiscent of the Nintendo Power Pad, this DIY fabric keyboard seems to keep the basic idea down pat. Off come your shoes and in Tom Hanks fashion, you walk over to the letter you want to type and give it a tap.

It uses the popular Arduino processor to control the letters, which are made out of conductive fabric and perforated foam. The keyboard was found on Flickr user Maurin’s page and he certainly seems to be the crafty builder.

If only Fred Astaire could give this a try.

Knife Proof T-Shirt Oddly Not Equally Nipple Proof

knifeproof.jpg

The Nihon Uni company, a uniform producer in Chuo Ward, Osaka, has developed a meshy t-shirt that is said to be knife-proof, and could save many from suffering being stabbed or shanked. The strength of the ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fiber material used to create this shirt can be compared to the material used in aramid fiber body armor. It certainly beats wearing armor made of CDs.

Conveniently machine-washable, Momma won’t have any trouble cleaning out the blood stains from this shirt, not saying there would be any, because it’s knife proof and everything. Just to point something out, the model wearing the T-shirt must have some seriously diamond grade bio-engineered nips, because those things look just about ready to slice through the fabric, unless it’s an optical illusion or some severe wishful thinking. — Andrew Dobrow
