Esquire’s E-Ink Cover Dissected

Filed under: DIYs, Design, Hacks, Hardware

With Esquire’s 75th anniversary taking place this year, the magazine released its latest issue with an E-Ink cover that comes with plenty of bits and pieces for DIYers to take apart and mess with. Phillip Torrone of MAKE points out the minor potential the E-ink cover has in regards to hacking but approves of its design with much enthusiasm. He writes:

“I know a lot of media folks & tech sites are pooping on this cover - but someone needed to start somewhere, I’m glad there’s an E-Ink cover in existence, it’s clear it’s going to be decades until it’s something that’s very common…”

Hardware fused with magazines and books?  We approve of such devices. Can you imagine Mad Magazine with an E-ink fold-in on the last page. It’d be completely electronic and eliminate the need to fold it yourself. You’d never make a bad crease and you’d always see the fold-in picture, eliminating the enjoyment and frustration as you attempt to guess what it is in the first place.

Editor’s Note: That fold-in idea is a genius!

Watchmen Closeups

Despite the ongoing legal battle between 20th Century FOX and Warner Bros. over Watchmen rights, Warner is still flinging press material left and right. Found in some Brazillian publication called SET, there’s four new close-ups of characters from the movie. Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian and the chick who’s fucking Night Owl (sorry, I just finished reading it and already forget half the book) all make an appearance that really gets me hyped for the 2009 release of the movie.

DIY Hemp Necklace

Let me tell you something, anyone making a DIY Hemp ANYTHING is a pothead. I don’t care if they happen to live in California and grow cannabis with less than 3-percent THC content. They’re still a pothead. Supplies for a hemp necklace include a charm of some sort and a shitload of marijuana plants. Just intertwine the stalks together and eventually, you’ll have a stunning, smelly piece of jewelry.

Or you could follow Lorain Blanken’s instructions and do it the correct way. Your call.

Shepard Fairey Book Covers

Shepard is well known for his OBEY campaign and art movement. So it would come as no surprise to most that he’s done two special bookcovers for the next printing of Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. It really has the commie-style look to it with big, bold graphics that really make a statement. Congratulations to Shepard. Let’s hope he has more covers in the works.

DIY LED Book Cover

Reading in bed just isn’t my thing. I tend to be that dude with the laptop watching YouTube videos until 3:00AM. Fortunately, there’s plenty of people who do read in bed, creating a lucrative market for light-up book covers everywhere. But why shell out $14.95 to Borders when they’re not even going to bother to order Vaginal Release, Volume 4 for you?

Instead of buying a nightlight book cover, try making your own. I’m sure that if you’ve helped a kid build LEGOs or finger paint, you can figure this out. Plus, you get to infuse your creativity onto the actual book cover that houses the LED light. Isn’t that wonderful? Expression! Now!

xcm_glow_psp_colors.jpg

If you can deal with the life-altering mutations and the screams of children as they gaze upon your disfigured face, there are some benefits to living right next to a nuclear power plant. One of the coolest being that cool natural glow. These XCM Magic Night Glow replacement covers for your PSP make the portable console look like it has been sitting next to a reactor a little too long with a glow in the dark sheen.

All you have to do is leave the PSP out in the sun for a few minutes, shut off all the lights, and watch as the PSP glows a bright shade of green, blue, or orange. The color selection is your choice, and luckily, you and your mutated face can order the covers right online, without leaving the comfort of your very own cage. Grab your own for about $25 each.
