Handbags Made From Hardbacks: Talk About Chick Lit

hardback1

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Unless, of course, the cover is all that remains of the poor thing. Look… I love books. Not only the actual reading process, but the actual aesthetic of print. It pains me to see pages ripped out of a hardback for fashion’s sake. Even if the novel happens to be a wimpy Nancy Drew mystery.

These Hardback Handbags are made of discarded hardback book covers. For the fashionable lit-chick, I don’t see many other cooler alternatives. Designer Caitlin Phillips has a whole crap load of bag volumes available at her site.

Fiber Optic Bed Cover and Pillow Will Fit Right In

bedcover

If you’ve already been rocking some glowing furniture, your other rooms must be feeling pretty dark and drab. Sure, you might sort of like sleeping in the dark like a normal person, but the addition of a luminous Fiber Optic Pillow and Bed Cover seems like the sort of glow we could get used to.

I don’t understand the whole Halloween color scheme, I mean, honestly, they could have picked any other two colors, sans green and red. But hey, it’s shiny and it’s cuddly. Can’t get much better than that.

Turn Your Roomba Into a Horny Toad

itoadjpg

Mmm, I’m not sure how I feel about this “mod” for the Roomba. While the furry cover for the vacuum is welcome, the strange look this toad has on its face is somewhat like the Mona Lisa’s smile: creepy and mysterious. That’s probably ’cause it’s made with real glass eyes. I get the whole toad thing, but how come I’m not horny yet?

Zing.

Make Like Bond and Skip The Toll Booth

Know how James Bond got that beautiful Aston Martin he drives? Well I’ll tell you right now he didn’t get it by paying for tolls like a sucker. With increasing prices on toll booths in Philadelphia, New York and other greater metro areas, people are always looking for a way to save a buck.

Now for $121, you can score a remote control RF license plate cover for your vehicle. While you’re driving, just hit a button and a piece of plastic will slide to cover your plate. It looks like it’s designed for European-style license plates but I’m sure with a little DIY modding, you can get it to cover up yours. Seems well worth $121 to me if you’re a speed demon.

Esquire’s E-Ink Cover Turned Digital Clock

We found little purpose for the E-paper cover of Esquire magazine’s October 2008 issue. That’s not to say we didn’t like it. It’s stylish and way cooler than that “boobless” trick with a calculator. We just think it’s a little bulkier than it should be, considering it’s the cover of a magazine.

Hack a Day’s Ian Lesnet took the Esquire cover to the lab where they tore it apart like a guinea pig in Biology class. The resulting project formed something useful out of the E-paper cover that anyone can build: a digital clock. It might not be the coup de grâce of all clocks, but it’s still more useful than it was when it was a magazine cover.

Esquire’s E-Ink Cover Dissected

With Esquire’s 75th anniversary taking place this year, the magazine released its latest issue with an E-Ink cover that comes with plenty of bits and pieces for DIYers to take apart and mess with. Phillip Torrone of MAKE points out the minor potential the E-ink cover has in regards to hacking but approves of its design with much enthusiasm. He writes:

“I know a lot of media folks & tech sites are pooping on this cover – but someone needed to start somewhere, I’m glad there’s an E-Ink cover in existence, it’s clear it’s going to be decades until it’s something that’s very common…”

Hardware fused with magazines and books?  We approve of such devices. Can you imagine Mad Magazine with an E-ink fold-in on the last page. It’d be completely electronic and eliminate the need to fold it yourself. You’d never make a bad crease and you’d always see the fold-in picture, eliminating the enjoyment and frustration as you attempt to guess what it is in the first place.

Editor’s Note: That fold-in idea is a genius!

Watchmen Closeups

Despite the ongoing legal battle between 20th Century FOX and Warner Bros. over Watchmen rights, Warner is still flinging press material left and right. Found in some Brazillian publication called SET, there’s four new close-ups of characters from the movie. Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian and the chick who’s fucking Night Owl (sorry, I just finished reading it and already forget half the book) all make an appearance that really gets me hyped for the 2009 release of the movie.

DIY Hemp Necklace

Let me tell you something, anyone making a DIY Hemp ANYTHING is a pothead. I don’t care if they happen to live in California and grow cannabis with less than 3-percent THC content. They’re still a pothead. Supplies for a hemp necklace include a charm of some sort and a shitload of marijuana plants. Just intertwine the stalks together and eventually, you’ll have a stunning, smelly piece of jewelry.

Or you could follow Lorain Blanken’s instructions and do it the correct way. Your call.

Shepard Fairey Book Covers

Shepard is well known for his OBEY campaign and art movement. So it would come as no surprise to most that he’s done two special bookcovers for the next printing of Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. It really has the commie-style look to it with big, bold graphics that really make a statement. Congratulations to Shepard. Let’s hope he has more covers in the works.
