Attention owners of the Nintendo 64!

You can score the best hockey game the system has to offer for a staggering 13 cents on Amazon.com. Yes. 13 cents. Don’t trust the guy selling Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ‘98 for that low? Then buy a copy from the other guy for 75 cents. Sure, there’s no box or manual included, but has that ever stopped you from gaming before? Didn’t think so.

Programmer Fixes An Obsolete Vectrex

Forget what I said about the Vectrex, I was merely poking fun. It is a goofy looking but awesomely retro gaming console that’s easy to ridicule. If you just so happen to have one collecting dust in your attic because of an obsolete chip, In Choi writes on Programmable Logic DesignLine about emulating the chip with logic design.

Choi proves that there are practical ways to overcome chip obsolescence. Constructing a replacement chip dubbed a RLD (retro logic device), a swap for the broken chip gets the system up and running again. We’re glad he used the Vectrex to prove his point.

Prepare For The New Xbox Experience

Microsoft has announced its New Xbox Experience will launch November 19, bringing a fresh look to the Xbox 360 Dashboard that integrates social features and customizable gamer avatars reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii’s Mii. In order to compete with the upcoming PlayStation Home, Microsoft is adding a slew of avatars, social networking features and more media to the Xbox 360.

Why Do Wii Fans Enjoy The Wii So Much?

What really makes the Wii so popular? Is it the robust library of games? Can’t be. Is it the faulty control mechanism? Anything is possible. What about the fact that Nintendo has the cheapest system on the market but you’ve got to buy twice as many controllers at marked up prices just so you can play with friends? Nah, that’s not why people like it.

Oh, this video explains it all! It’s the reason why people love the Nintendo Wii so much.  In this video found on YouTube, we see the stereotypical Wii user in action playing one of the first-person shooters featured on the Wii that more than likely has no blood in it. Watch as his excitement and pleasure become fulfilled by his best friend and companion who gets stirred up over the Wii, thus proving the Wii is as exciting as getting fucked by a dog.

Xbox 360: Now Cheaper and Still Plenty of Fun

What’s this? The price drop for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is official and not exclusive to just the Arcade version of the Xbox 360? Xbox 360 Arcade will now retail for a price of $199.99, the standard 360 console for $299.99 and the Elite for $399.99. This gives the 360 the “cheapest system” title, taking the place of the $249.99 Nintendo Wii.

So, if you get the red ring of death: don’t worry about it. No need to ship it out to Microsoft for them to fix and send back to you six months later. Just drop two hundred on the arcade and slap your hard drive in it and you’re set for Fallout 3 come the end of October.

XB01 Xbox 360 ATX Case

Filed under: Desktops, Gaming, Hacks, Handhelds

Are you into so-called “alternative lifestyles”? Do you game but feel your Xbox 360 isn’t satisfying you? You might need Lian-Li’s communist XB01 Xbox 360 case. It’s a modified ATX-style computer case for your Xbox 360. Made out of brushed aluminum, the case greatly resembles that of a Mac Pro. The XB01 should solve the cooling issues that plague the 360 thanks to the metal case and a large 120mm rear fan. Anyone looking to mod the 360 will surely find tinkering much easier with their console in a conventional PC case.

At $149, it’s not the cheapest case but remember: it’s already molded for your Xbox. Just pop it in and pray that you don’t get the RROD.

Sony Announces Virtual Advertising Space For The Highest Bidder

In an effort to stem losses from console sales (because the PS3 is a steal), Sony announced Friday that it is in desperate need of cash. Well, that wasn’t verbatim but it was something along the lines of an offer for advertising space in their upcoming games.

“Various game titles are played by fans who like certain things, which can offer opportunities for targeted ads,” said a Sony spokesman.

Wait, doesn’t everyone like certain things? Prepare yourself for a mindfuck of corporate pollution in your video games. The ’shopped picture says it all.

Famicom Sans Console

Remember that Nintendo Famicom which was built into an NES cartidge? That was cool and all, but a post on Ben Heckendorn’s console hacking forum by user Darkeru revealed a new approach which may have just one upped it. Not only did he manage to fit the NES inside the cartridge, he also has managed to embed a controller and a screen!

The catch? It doesn’t play cartridges. That’s alright though, since this hack relies on games already integrated into the chip. This prevents the bulkiness of having a cartridge sticking out of a cartridge and makes the system comfortable and more portable. It runs on three N-cell batteries, so don’t expect to be playing NES games endlessly.

DIY Neo-Geo Joysticks

Filed under: DIYs, Gaming, Hacks, Peripherals

If you grew up in the 1990s, you may remember the Neo-Geo Home MVS console. It was a flop, due mostly in part to expensive hardware and super expensive games. Fast forward to 2008 and still, no one is looking to pay an outrageous price for an arcade-style joystick.

One student at NJIT decided he’d make his own joysticks instead. Although they work fine and look OK, the stix come in wooden boxes. Ugly wooden boxes full of splinters. It’s not pretty but it gets the job done. Oh, and they also work on PS2 and Dreamcast. Not too shabby.

Ben Heck’s Portable Atari 7800

Following his creation of a portable Atari 2600, Ben Heck was hesitant to make the 7800 portable due to the complexity of the motherboard. But Ben didn’t let that phase him as he’s finally finished the portable Atari 7800. The motherboard was larger than the 2600’s thus the unit had to be larger, so Ben slapped a 7-inch wide screen onto it to make up for it’s bulky size.

The system, with its corpulent form, still weighs less than a gallon of milk and runs on rechargeable batteries.  Even the Sega Game Gear is jealous of this thing! Though Ben claims it’s portable; it will never fit in your pockets like a Game Boy Micro will. Then again, the Micro doesn’t have quite the game library the 7800 has.
