Build a $500 Gaming PC

139461-crysis-21

Have you ever dreamed of finally owning a PC that could play the uber-popular Crysis? Of course you have. Luckily, Maximum PC threw together a guide on how to build a computer using quality parts for about $500. The end result is a machine that can handle Crysis at 40 frames-per-second, ensuring that nearly any game can be installed and enjoyed on it. The caveat? They didn’t include an OS but everyone knows Windows is free.

Ben Heck’s C64 Laptop

200904070658jpg

Dream for days of true retro-gaming on the go? Ben Heck has you covered. He’s put his master modder skills to good use this time around, creating a portable Commodore 64 laptop. Says Heck:

This project somehow has the distinction of being both the longest and fastest portable electronics project I have ever done. I originally started making a C64 laptop in the fall of 2006, and kept pecking away at it every so often. Finally, a few weeks ago, I said “screw it” and started over.

I redid everything in a week and a half – the shortest project ever. (The previous record hold was the Wii portable at 2 weeks) The goal this time was to make something that looked exactly like a computer from the early 80’s, yet in a new form. Including the color beige and texture

Full keyboard, SD slot for loading up programs and a display that rings true to the original. Nice work. Hit the link to see how Ben did it and plenty o’ pictures.

Pillow Suit Protects From Narcolepsy Related Injury

pillow1

How often do you find yourself falling asleep at your computer as you surf the web into the early hours of the morning? Have you woken up with keyboard squares etched into your forehead? Maybe even stiff limbs? The “Pillows for Workaholics” suit will protect you from yourself and your stupid ass decisions.

Or maybe you could just stop the World of Warcraft marathons and masturbatory wank-fests, maybe go to sleep in a “bed” like a “normal” person who isn’t “addicted to transsexual porn.” That’s always an option. But why bother with tradition when you can just dress in the pillow suit? Narcoleptics could totally wear this suit around all the time for some extra protection, not to mention the entertainment value for onlookers. (more…)

Hi, I’m Doctor Vincent Veneziani B.D.. I’ll be your breast doctor for today. Please remove your shirt.

Thanks. Hmmm, good feel. Nice and firm. Not too big. I’d say you’re healthy. What’s this, though? You’re always cold? No problem. Try these USB breast warmers out. Where did I get them? Where else? Thanko! Just plug them in and I promise that within 48 hours, your breasts will be swollen with warmth. My right hand? Oh, sorry. I was just getting a pen out of my pocket…

Miyamoto’s Game Solving System For Newbies

Holy shit. Apparently Miyamoto still has some ideas lodged in that adolescent skull of his. Nintendo has recently filed a patent application in the US for a system that will potentially aid gamers via computer controlled characters in sections too difficult for the player to overcome. This idea comes straight from Miyamoto who is worried that some games are too difficult for players to proceed through and the gamer’s ambition to play ends prematurely because of this.

This new patent should help prevent such situations and assist newbies too novice enough to pass tricky puzzles in Nintendo games aimed at five-year-olds. So, if you find yourself lost, having no idea where the next dungeon is, allow the computer to take control of your character to show you the correct route. It beats playing through the game yourself and accomplishing success all on your own. In the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson: “Can’t someone else do it?”

Mac OS X Compatibility Chart For The Latest Netbooks

Interested in running Mac OS X on your new netbook? Then check out this compatibility chart provided by Rob Beschizza of Boing Boing Gadgets. Because Apple takes its sweet time on all of its ideas, netbook users have taken it upon themselves to try and get the Mac operating system running on various different netbooks.

According to Rob, the ideal choice for installing OS X are the MSI Wind or Dell Mini 9. Both of which can be turned in to a hackintosh with little problems. There are still some shades of gray on the chart, but it’s everyday users who will figure out these compatibility issues, not Apple.

PC Case Mod: That’s So Tron!

This is one ill case mod. That’s slang for “well done and sexy,” which is exactly what Nick Falzone was going for with this computer case inspired by a Beijing building. This concoction of wood and circuitry looks to be a mash up of Tron and the Borg cube, minus the corrupt programs and assimilation.

Because Nick is such a nice fellow, he provides a detailed guide on making your own at the link provided. Think you’ve got the carpentry skills of Jesus coupled with the circuitry know how of Geordi LaForge? Prove it.

Gaming PC Suspended In Liquid

Now this is a serious case mod if I’ve ever seen one. It’s a 100-pound gaming rig from Hardcore Computer. The specs are supposed to be insane and that’s nothing new; it’s for gaming. This PC’s special trait is that it resides submerged in 4.5 gallons of cooling oil, which is custom designed specifically for PCs. It’s supposed to be very stable and more efficient than air or water-cooled machines. The real question is: what happens when you break it in a drunken rage? Will your apartment suffer the next Deep Impact?

Acer Aspire One Reviewed

I really enjoy using the Acer Aspire One for just about everything. Blogging, retro gaming, porno — you name it, this little netbook can do it. Well, running Crysis on high settings isn’t going to happen, but one can try.

FCC Leaks Up and Coming Sony VAIO Netbooks

Most people think the FCC is all bad and all that it wants to do is prevent us from enjoying quality television with harsh language and nudity. Well, they would be right except that once in a blue moon the FCC blows the lid on some covert hardware that will soon hit store shelves. This time the FCC has leaked word of Sony’s latest VAIO netbooks.

Yes, you read right. It turns out that Sony does not feel too high and mighty enough to not compete with the slew of netbooks its competitors have been selling like hot cakes. Not much but enough is known about the two new models known as the PCG-1P1L and PCG-1P2L. The PCG prefix is known to represent Sony’s VAIO portable line and the dimensions of these latest models match typical netbook sizes, approximately 9.5 inches long by 4.5 inches wide. We’re excited to see Sony showing interest in the netbook market and can’t wait to get our hands on it!
