Time Tracking of Yesteryear Finds New Light

Apparently, NXT STEP blog reader DTAAX’s watch must have broke, which would explain why he designed this LEGO sundial. This DIY finds a new way to tell time the old way. It was built using the LEGO NTX platform (plus a PDA for trigonometric functions) using a slew of light and touch sensors, allowing the sundial to perform like any other sundial save that it’s powered by three motors.

After the LEGO set rotates for some time, Bluetooth communications are sent out which detail the exact magnetic point in which the maximum level of light had been seen. It is accurate within fifteen minutes of actual time, so don’t go using it for your next dentist appointment despite it having a better track record than traditional sundials. Unfortunately, it will not fit in your LEGO backpack like a normal watch or clock would.

You’re in London and Mom wants a birthday present. As a gardener, she’s bound to love butterflies. And she cooks a lot too! So I can bet she’s always checking the clock to make sure her famous mocha-chip cookies aren’t burnt. Why not order this lovely butterfly clock from the Design Shop? It’s a bit expensive at $211, but would you put a price tag on your own mother? Didn’t think so. Are you paying cash or credit?

The Scopeclock: Time In A Tube

Ever have a cathode ray tube blow up in your face? You poor soul. With your disfigured mug, there’s little that could possibly cheer you up. After all, if I looked like the Two-Face I’d probably throw myself from a pier. This clock is sure to remind you of that terrible day your face became disfigured. That or your days as a Captain in the Navy.

A cathode ray tube sits inside a transparent acrylic tube. It might look like the guts of your old monitor but in actuality it is a clock that displays various formats of time thanks to a SC200 clock board. Nixie enthusiast David Forbes is eager to sell these works of art for an eye-gouging $999.  The intricate design shows an astounding amount of commitment thrown in that’ll complement any mantle.

Pop Quiz Clock Causes All Sorts Of Confusion

Nowadays, digital clocks need to be installed in public schools because the human race is evolving into a new, dumber mammal. I embrace this change, however, I still can read an analog clock. I say we make it even harder for our dumb-founded youth, by installing these 11.5-inch clocks in every public school across the nation. Sure, the twelve and the one hands are simple mathematics, but the seven hand might be too many variables for your average confused by a digital clock student.

So I ran through all of them with my trusty calculator, double checking to make sure they were right, only to be left in dismay over the fact that a few of the answers aren’t whole numbers. What the hell is 9.0047 o’ clock? Either way, it’s a thought-provoking design with an incalculable price tag.

Nail Biting Time Keeper

In respect to 150 years of watch crafting, Timex, in collaboration with Core77, held a global design competition called 2154: the future of time design. OK Timex, you win this one. No one is going to compete watch designs with 150 years of watch experience.

One runner up of the competition, the TX54 concept, is a disposable clock and calender that can be worn on the user’s thumbnail. No one wants an obtrusive monster of a watch around their wrist when they can have a translucent nail clock that makes seeing in the dark as easy as pressing down on the end of your thumbnail. Look, it’s 4:20. You know what that means.

Caterpillar Watch Thinks It’s A Bulldozer

The standard wristwatch hasn’t changed much in the past few centuries. Design student Nicolas Lehotzky was tired of the vanilla-looking watches of the 21st century. Instead, he has designed three prototype wristwatches to reflect the brand and product values of Caterpillar, Brembo and SRAM.

Most notably is his Caterpillar model which is directly inspired by a bulldozer track and extends it into a faceless watch with a fabric belt. The numbers on it slowly rotate around the entire wrist, with the current hour presented on an elevated platform.  We’ve dubbed it, the “Indian-burn” watch. Guaranteed to leave your wrist sore and blistering.

Trick Out Your Homer Simpson Clock

It’s no mystery that Homer Simpson is a portrait of manliness worldwide. That’s why Tony Sambuchi has taken it upon himself to turn this store-bought talking Homer Simpson clock into something more.  After stripping the clock of its innards, Sambuchi manages to get the clock to play Homer’s voice through his sound system every hour and he turns the clock into a light show as well. Bravo.

While not the coolest homage to the Simpsons, this DIY clock mod is sure to make every hardcore Simpsons fan’s mouth water.

Digital Clock T-Shirt

Not into watches? That’s OK, ’cause not all of us are. If you gotta know the time though, I suggest scoring one of these Digital Clock T-Shirts. It’s your standard black t-shirt with a simple LED clock built into the clothing. Sure, it’ll be a bit heavy and it takes 4 AA batteries, but imagine all the ass you’re going to get at the next party the basketball team throws.

At $38, it’s a bit pricey for such a basic shirt. You’d really get your money’s worth if you integrated it into your Halloween costume.

TIX LED Clock Resembles A Channel Changer

Upon first gaze, one might think that the TIX LED Clock is actually a futuristic TV remote. In reality, it’s just another crazy clock made by some designer who got bit by the “unique and interesting” mosquito. Each digit is represented by the number of illuminated squares, making the clock tricky to read at first but something you’ll no doubt pick up on in time.

As you can see, the current time in the picture is 12:34, which should give you a better idea of how TIX works. For $50, you can score a model in either black or silver.

Huge Ceiling Clock

This ceiling clock may be massive but it does bare quite a resemblance to your night-stand companion. Doubling as both a timepiece and a functional light source, you’ll stand in amazement watching time fly by. I wonder if there’s an annoying alarm to go with it…
