WuFu Glasses Give Bat-like Sight to the Blind
Taking inspiration from our favorite little flying rodent friend, the bat, the WuFu Glasses provides visual aid to the blind by carrying ultrasonic waves to sensors on the glasses, translating those waves into vibrations. The wrist straps on each arm vibrate to provide the blind user a general idea of their whereabouts, without the need of a guide. A compass sensor keeps the user on the right path and helps avoid obstacles. Not to mention the glasses look pretty neat... Continue reading
Porn for the Blind: Finger It Out For Yourself
Being blind means never again seeing a pair of boobies in your face. Sure, you can feel them pressing against your skin, but that doesn’t do much good when you don’t have an actual woman around to unleash her twinnebagos. Artist Lisa J. Murphy created Tactile Mind, an erotic book for the blind featuring raised sexual imagery which can be felt using the tips of your fingers, along with a braille description of the image. Oddly enough, Murphy came up... Continue reading
Rubik’s Cube for the Blind, Part Deux: The Ugly One
Alright, let’s just be honest here. This Rubik’s Cube isn’t going to be winning any beauty pageants in some alternative universe where Rubik’s Cubes actually have intelligence and hold their own contests. Unless, of course, Rubik’s Cubes have a whole different definition of beauty. Maybe multi-colored, multi-textured, torture device-looking gadgets are their definition of a really hot bod. Probably not though. Unlike the Braille Rubik’s Cube, this cube can be used by everyone (sorry amputees, you don’t count in this argument), as the... Continue reading
Braille Rubik’s Cube for the Blind
The world of a blind geek must be a difficult one. Many of the luxuries we take for granted (watching Star Wars, reading fanfiction, witnessing Steve Jobs unveil the newest device in the Apple arsenal) just aren’t possible for the blind to the extent that the fully-functional among us have become accustomed to. Imagine Star Wars without being able to actually see Chewbacca. The roars are still awesome, but it’s his nuanced facial expressions and movements which make the Wookiee.... Continue reading
What We Need is More Blind Artists
That’s what this world is lacking. Blind artists. No, I’m not talking people who would think are blind because of their awful color schemes. I’m talking straight up blind people. Don’t they have, like, a sixth (well, fifth for them) sense? The Touch Color device allows blind people to create their own colorful works of art, using braille and tactile sensations to allow the user to feel the color, rather than see it. The temperature of the 24 colors included... Continue reading
Braille Tattoos Allow The Blind to Feel the Ink
We’ve seen some truly unique body mods and tattooing. Everything from watch and glasses implants to tattoos showing off our favorite obsessions. These Braille Tattoos don’t disappoint. Implanted under the skin are braille-shaped spheres which allow the blind braille reader to read the words of your tat. I have no idea what the pictured braille tattoo says, but I’d love to know. Any of you know braille or feel like decoding the message? Link [via]
Braille E-book Reader
While the Amazon Kindle 2 is a fresh take on an e-book reader with its ability to read back books to you, some people who have a visual impairment could use something they can feel rather than hear. That’s the idea behind this concept braille e-book reader. Bumps change on a dynamic surface that can emulate braille, thus bringing a whole new world of reading to the blind. Link
Bright-F Gives The Blind Sight In The Form Of Sound
Imagine all of the beautiful visions you’d miss if you were born without sight. Until science figured out a cure for blindness, you would never get to see the blue sky on a clear day or how green the grass can get in the spring. The Bright-F concept hopes to give the blind community a chance to experience different shades and hues based on sound. The Bright-F detects and translates brightness, saturation, and color into unique sounds. Forget about... Continue reading
Rubik’s Cube For The Blind
And we thought Rubik’s Cube was impossible, even with visual aid. This cube puzzle is made for those without sight, instead relying on touch, rather than color orientation. Each side has a different pattern which you have to try and align with other same shaped patterns. Having the oppurtunity to say “I solved Rubik’s cube without looking at it once” is also a pretty cool perk. — Andrew Dobrow Link
