Lock ‘Em Out With Text Messaging

If someone ever stole my car, I’d wish for a feature that would allow me to cause my car to blow up via text message. That’s kind of the idea behind Lenovo’s latest notebook feature: Lenovo Constant Secure Remote Disable Feature.

Important data on your computer that you can’t have falling into the wrong hands? A porn library you can’t possibly have your wife stumbling upon? This new service will prevent any such scenarios by allowing the laptop’s owner to shut the computer down over a WWAN connection and lock it. All it takes is a simple text message from a cell phone to cripple your notebook’s capabilities. That will teach them to mess with your stuff! Look for this new feature around Q1 2009 on Lenovo notebooks at no additional charge.

Kenyan Teenager Invents Automobile Anti-Theft System

This kid has managed to render OnStar obsolete and he’s all the way on the other side of the world doing it! The self taught gadget wiz, Morris Mbetsa, has managed to create an anti-theft device and tracking system for vehicles that’s cellphone-based. The owner can take control of their vehicle’s ignition and disable it with his/her cellphone at any time. Locking the car remotely as well as the ability to listen in on any conversations taking place within the vehicle all via your cellular phone are two other features Mbetsa has added to his invention.

Sometimes stickers that make your car look beat up or fake head units just won’t do the trick to prevent would-be thieves. We like what this young man has done and we look forward to seeing more of his amazing hacks.

DIY Car Stereo Faceplate Fools Would-be Thieves

Quality car stereos are always getting stolen so a poster on Instructibles who goes by the name of sfgabe came up with an easy way to fool thieves into thinking that your sound system has already been jacked. Gabe, who says he lives in a “sketchy section [of] Oakland” where his car gets broken into on a “weekly basis” came up with a technique that enables you to place a broken faceplate in front of your stereo to cover up the real thing create the impression that the dashboard has been gutted while still keeping your sweet stereo safe and sound. If you make yourself one of these and get some of those anti-theft faux-rust stickers, criminals will definitely keep far away from your ride, but be forewarned potential dates will probably have the same reaction. If you want a ride that manages to stay secure while still looking impressive allow me to suggest Volkswagen’s seemingly impregnable Ego concept car.

Dominic Wilcox is both a great graphic designer and a cheeky bastard. He’s come up with these realistic-looking rust stickers that go on your car or bicycle. Dominic figures that, because your bike looks like shit, no one is going to steal it. Fair enough.

You can grab a set for $8 but remember, no guarantees!

Trick Burglars Without the Electric Bill

Ever wonder why burglars are less likely to break into your home if they see a TV glare off of a window? Me too. Chances are it’s just some lazy couch potato that you could mug for a few hundred bucks, but instead, burglars take the safe approach, waiting for signs of vacancy before breaking in and leaving with a necklace, pearl earrings and a new toaster.

With Blaine Readler’s invention, the FakeTV, you need not worry about toaster-stealing crooks. This simplistic idea is an easy way to emulate a television to make it appear as if you’re home watching Conan. Sure, you could leave your television and rack up your electric bill, but this is a cheaper, alternative solution. If this burglar just so happens to not care whether you’re home or not, he/she is now in possession of an awesome new FakeTV.
