As something of an American History buff there are certain topics I like to keep a close eye on- one of those is the American Mafia and/or organized crime in general. As such I had to have a look at a certain presentation by Patrick Byrne, PhD. & CEO of Overstock.com: Naked Shorts, Bust-Outs, and the Once and Future Cataclysm: economic warfare. It’s a fairly long title, but the presentation itself is pretty well mind blowing in nature.
Apparently there is a secret war going on behind boardroom doors and inside court rooms. This war is between corrupt lawyers and honest businesses. In this war there are infiltrators who enter into a business and work hard to over leverage it. They then abandon it like rats and the business is forced to go bankrupt. That’s when the lawyers come in and sue for damages on behalf of non-existent clients.
Well no – they have clients of a kind. These clients however are individuals like the Mafia, the Triads, and most recently fundamentalists terrorists. Yes – terrorists! Hezbollah, Hamas, and many other Jihadists are entering the game under the cover of mortgage fraud. Surprisingly even after the mortgage bubble burst, this type of fraud is one of the fastest growing forms of white collar crime. And no one even really knows about despite how drastically this can do stock market manipulation leading to recessions and the like.
So what is being done? There is talk of a new law going into affect, but honestly there needs to be something more. The problem is that I don’t know where to start. Or maybe it’s more that I don’t trust the people in Washington to do right by this issue – not if it affects their bottomline. In fact, who really knows how far this all goes? And now I sound like a conspiracy nut, but it honestly is rather frightening. Oh, well I guess all I can do right now is spread the word – maybe someone out there will have a better idea on how to proceed.
