Apple iPhone OS 4 Event Recap: Multitasking and More

Today, Apple gathered together the tech media to offer a sneak peek into Apple’s iPhone OS 4. The results offered pretty much everything most of us were hoping for. Here’s a quick recap of what you might have missed.

  • Multitasking – a new multitasking UI pop-up which allows users to switch between tasks and apps
  • Folders – organize your applications into designated folders. Allows users to have up to 2,160 apps on their phone rather than the previous limit of 180.
  • Custom Wallpaper – for both the lock screen and home screen
  • Enhanced e-mail app – unified inbox, allowing a hose of multiple e-mail accounts to one screen, rather than jumping between multiple inboxes. Manage multiple Exchange accounts.
  • iBooks Support – very similar to the iPad. Buy on one device and share across devices.
  • Enhanced Enterprise Features – wireless app distribution. Better data protection and encryption.
  • Game Center – a new social gaming platform. Challenge friends to games. Matchmaking feature hooks you up with random gamers for multiplayer games. Leaderboards and achievements.
  • iAd – A native mobile advertising system built right into the OS. Apple will sell the ads and offer developers 60% of the revenue.

iPhone OS 4 will drop for the end user in Summer 2010. Developers get a preview version today. The full update will be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G. The iPhone 3G and earlier iPod versions will get many of the features, but will not include multitasking.
