A visual taxonomy of anime opening sequences

The Flocking Birds, the Sparkling Forest, the Joy Rictus… you could systematically name, categorize, and compare all of the trope used in anime opening-credit sequences. Better, you could compile the best examples into a video that makes an elegant argument for the awesome economy of anime visual semantics. But you don’t have to go to the trouble, because artist and Kick in the Head webcomic creator Derek Lieu already has done it. It’s a splendid example of the new ekphrasis, too, if you’re into that sort of thing. Lieu explains the project and lists the sources in his Youtube post.

  1. It’s perhaps not as rigourous, but Pure “A meditation on violence and visual tropes at the movies” is doing something similar to Lieu’s video i think: http://vimeo.com/12133254

  2. Anime X-Men? @2:07 When that happened?

    Nice Ayumi medley.
