The Writing on the Wall

The strenuous outsider scholarship of underground intellectual Steve Duncan charts the history of New York public transit, surreptitiously. Video after the jump. Continue reading

LEGO Art Hits the Streets with Hugman

Our favorite LEGO artist, Nathan Sawaya, has decided to do something a little different this time around. His newest project takes LEGO bricks to the streets of New York City. Meet Hugman, a humanoid LEGO structure built to hug various objects in populated areas. While Hugman rarely spends more than one day in one given spot (we imagine he’d be subject to vandalism if left much longer), seeing a LEGO sculpture in any capacity should be enough to change your... Digging a Hole: The Massive Tunnel Boring Machine Used to Create City Subways

And here I was, thinking that the city council just hired a bunch of midgets with rock hammers to dig out subway system. But nope, as it turns out the New York City Transit system uses a massive contraption called a Tunnel Boring Machine, or a TBM, which literally bores tunnel-sized holes through the subterranean catacombs of the city. According to NYC Transit, the TBM “was originally made 30 years ago and used on 4 other projects; it has been reconditioned to... Continue reading

NYC Subways Install LCD Screens to Track Train Locations

While I’m not a New Yorker, I live in close enough proximity to the city that this is pretty exciting. New York City has installed an LCD screen at the Bedford Ave L station subway stop, testing a system that could one day allow patrons to see exactly where their train is. Updating every 15 seconds, the screen accompanies boards installed earlier this year which tell subway riders when the next train will be at the station. If this little... Continue reading

NYC Spaghetti

If it tastes anything close to how it looks you can expect the distinct flavor of urine and taxi exhaust. Mmm… urban. Link

New York City Hotel Tiles Floor With Pennies

As far as tiling goes, this has got to be the most ostentatious floor paneling we’ve come across. The Standard Grill Hotel in New York has a uniquely tiled floor. The floor is tiled with thousands of shiny pennies. Real, authentic, actual pennies. You might miss it if you don’t look close, but I guess it’s the small things which can make a huge difference. Now if I want to impress anyone I’m going to have to tile my floor... Continue reading

NYC Subway Map Cuff

Ah, yes. Functional jewelry. For people who’ve just migrated to the big city (as in, New York) and haven’t found themselves acclimated, consider dropping $23 on designer Tiffany Burnette’s wristcuff-thingy. It’s a metal cuff bracelet with the entire map of the subway on it. And by entire map, I mean Manhattan minus the ghetto areas uptown. Made in New York, for New Yorkers. Link

Prankster Screws with Crosswalk LEDs

This has to be one of the best street pranks ever. Spotted on the streets of Manhattan, some urban prankster had the ingenious idea of altering the “stop” hand of a traditional crosswalk light to resemble a hand flipping the bird instead. Want to cross the street? Fuck off! No really, just go away. Viva las vandalism! This is so New York City. Link [via]

Pop Up Vitamin Water Store

Look, I’m not going to lecture you about what you should be eating or drinking. I don’t know how your lifestyle works. But I can tell you this: Vitamin Water won’t make you thin but if you are big on the soda and junk food, it’s a good way to start weening yourself off that crap. Those of you in NYC will no longer need to hit up the local bodega for a bottle of the good stuff. Coca-Cola, the... Continue reading
