A Practical Use Of The Furby

Filed under: DIYs, Design, Hacks, Hardware, Robots

Remember the hit toy the Furby? It was the first successfully domestically-aimed robot that sold well because all the kids just had to have it. But, just like the Tickle-Me Elmo or any other Christmas time fad, it died off and everyone forgot about it. That is, until David Cranmer skinned a few of them and turned them into a musical instrument that takes no skill to play unlike the Stylophone.

Using four Furbies, David managed to craft some intricate music boxes that wind up to release a kicking tune that proves Furbies are more useful and fun when they’re skinned and mounted. One is even being sold on eBay for a little over $700. If you check out the effort that has gone into making this musical box, you’d know that that price is not steep.

The Drum Table

These fully customizable percussion coffee tables will soon render games like Rock Band a thing of the past. Designer Tor Clausen crafts these in his studio in Olympia, Washington. The drum table has a large variety of re-arrangeable inserts that mimic many percussion instruments and comes in four different sizes, the smallest of which accepts four of the smaller instruments and the largest table accepts sixteen. The percussive components that can be added to the table include (but or not limited to): tambourine, snare, cowbell and three levels of bongo.

Sure, there’s a fun time to be had by all, but eating on it is a bitch.

Bathtunes: WET X-Light Surround Musical Washbasin

xflightbaththing

Most of us love to sing in the shower when no one’s around. I tend to take it one step further and sing while I’m shaving and taking a piss, but hey, if no one’s listening, might as well! Italian design company WET has created the X-Light Surround Basin with people like yours truly in mind.

At 142 x 38 cm, this transparent sink features dual basins and an integrated sound system. You can easily hook up an iPod or CD player to the built-in speaker system for instant Huey Lewis & The News, which beats listening to that cardboard music box you built last week. It’s available now, so be prepared to shell out the big bucks for such an elegant piece.
