Drawdio: Drawing Music
Once in awhile, I come across an invention that blows my mind in terms of creativity and functionality. Jay Silver’s Drawdio most certainly fits into that category. Drawdio is a pencil that has a simple synthesizer hooked up to the graphite. Based on the conductivity of graphite, drawing on paper will produce various different sounds creating a one-of-a-kind music experience. This is user-interaction on a whole other level. Believe it or not, you can build your own Drawdio. The famous... Continue reading
Who Buys Music?
Woke up to this cartoon on Tumblr. It’s so, so true, especially after my cousin received $75 in iTunes Gift Cards for Xmas. I mean, who really buys new music? Apps, apps, apps! Link
Video: iTouchMidi 101
This is a video I recorded earlier today demonstrating iTouchMidi, a program we wrote about the other day. I demonstrate how it works and show you how you can use your iPod Touch or iPhone as a beatmaking device. Very cool stuff here. Be sure to check it out and leave comments on those sweet sunglasses I’m wearing. YouTube Link
Can You Resell Your MP3s? Good Question
Ars Technica has a great writeup on the subject of reselling MP3s. CDs are on the way out and I can’t remember the last time I bought one (probably Vampire Weekend). The thing is, you could easily resell a CD. Take the physical media to your local CD shop, trade it in for a few bucks and that’s it. So what about MP3s? There’s no physical disc or anything to pick up and if you resell it, what’s to stop... Continue reading
Turn Your iPhone/iPod Touch Into A MIDI Controller
The best things in life are free, no question about it. But even if it wasn’t free, I’d most likely buy iTouchMidi, a program for both OS X and Windows that will receive MIDI signals from your iPhone or iPod Touch via WiFi. Pretty insane right? Check out what this guy did with two iPod Touches and iTouchMidi software. He uses the touchscreens mounted to his guitar to control Ableton Live and pull off some Brian Eno-type shit. I’d keep... Musicians Complain About Guantanamo Bay Treatment
So here’s the deal: since 2003, the US Army has been effectively torturing detainees at Guantanamo with scare tactics and other jazz. One of the tactics is to blast music and rock and roll at prisoners “to create fear, disorient … and prolong capture shock.” Everything was peachy keen until this year, when several musicians teamed up to protest the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Artists like Massive Attack and Tom Morello are trying to create awareness for this... Continue reading
Joe Satriani Sues Coldplay Over Copyright Infringement
Sucks to be Coldplay, especially when you’re getting your ass sued by Joe Satriani over alleged copyright infringement. Satriani claims that Coldplay’s hit single, Viva La Vida, uses “substantial original portions” of his song If I Could Fly from 2004. Ouch. It’s not looking good for Coldplay, either. I mean, when your own front man has been quoted in the past, saying this: We’re definitely good, but I don’t think you can say we’re that original. I regard us as... Continue reading
I-Dog Joins The KISS Army
Straight out of Hell and right under your Christmas tree is this hotter than Hell KISS-themed I-Dog. Who rocks harder than KISS? That’s right: no one. The dog sports Gene Simmons’ Demon face paint, but also shows some love to Paul Stanley with stars for the Star Child. It plays back music via a built-in speaker and also puts on an electronic light show, all for just 30 bucks. If this dog was a real supporter of KISS, it’d drop... Continue reading
Who Rocks Harder: Metallica or Judas Priest
It’s Friday and you know what that means: Ryan is menstruating again. We’re currently locked in a heated battle over IM on who reigns supreme in the world of music: Metallica or Judas Priest. It all started when I told Ryan that anything Metallica did in the 1980s was harder than Judas Priest or any other band, including but not limited to, Iron Maiden. I’m talking about some heavy shit here. We’re talking albums like Master of Puppets, …and Justice... Continue reading
The Evolution Control Committee In Action
Ever heard that song “Rocked By Rape” that’s made up of AC/DC samples and clips of Dan Rather? No? Ok, then go here. Great. So that’s the Evolution Control Committee. They sure do some neat stuff with them there musical instruments. If you watch the above video, you can see how they use a Wiimote to control their mashups when in concert. The setup uses Ableton Live, infrared technology, a touchscreen and a thimble that keeps loops playing. It looks... Continue reading
