ps3s_1

The PS3 Slim was already beginning to feel a little chubby. Time takes a a toll on the body. Thankfully, we have Ben Heck to make everything more portable. His new PS3 Slim Laptop takes the improved hardware of the Slim and makes it even more mobile with his notebook-inspired mod.

Microsoft Bribing Bloggers Again

microsoft_Acer

Right around the time Windows Vista came out, Microsoft was engaged in a PR campaign where they would give a blogger an Acer laptop loaded with Vista (see above picture) and not ask for it back. Free laptops mean good reviews, right? The whole thing blew up in Microsoft’s face, so in mid-2009, you’d think it’d learn its lesson, right?

Nope. Microsoft is out attacking Apple again with this whole “real life stories” bullshit campaign (they use actors). This time around, Microsoft will send you a laptop for six months plus a copy of Office 2010. Of course, you’ll be “reviewing” it, but what teenager wouldn’t feel great about getting a laptop for six months? More deception and bullshit from the best of the best, folks: Microsoft.

Transformer Laptop USB Hub

tranformer-laptop-usb-hub-500x272

The laptop hub itself is enough to generate an epic “Yo Dawg” meme which would make Xzibit cry in frustration. But add in transformer functionality and you have some sort of weird meta-paradox which isn’t even worth the effort to meme-ificate.

This robotic transformer hub folds into the shape of a mini-laptop with four additional USB ports. Now all we need is four even smaller laptop hubs to hook into this transformer hub. Now that would be an epic “Sup Dawg.”

“Yo dawg I heard you like mini laptop transformer hubs so we put mini laptop transformer hubs in yo mini laptop transformer hub so you can transfer and transform while you transfer and transform.” Win.

Ben Heck’s C64 Laptop

200904070658jpg

Dream for days of true retro-gaming on the go? Ben Heck has you covered. He’s put his master modder skills to good use this time around, creating a portable Commodore 64 laptop. Says Heck:

This project somehow has the distinction of being both the longest and fastest portable electronics project I have ever done. I originally started making a C64 laptop in the fall of 2006, and kept pecking away at it every so often. Finally, a few weeks ago, I said “screw it” and started over.

I redid everything in a week and a half – the shortest project ever. (The previous record hold was the Wii portable at 2 weeks) The goal this time was to make something that looked exactly like a computer from the early 80’s, yet in a new form. Including the color beige and texture

Full keyboard, SD slot for loading up programs and a display that rings true to the original. Nice work. Hit the link to see how Ben did it and plenty o’ pictures.

A Rugged Dell Laptop John Connor Would Use

XFSDelllaptop

If Terminators and Skynet take over Earth, at least you’ll have a laptop that will stand up to them. The Dell E6400 XFR is the latest “toughbook” to hit the market and boy is it ugly. That’s OK, though, because you’re buying this for usability, not design and portability. Inside this ugly beast, you’ll find a decent set of specs including an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 256MB of nVidia Quadro 160M graphics and a big 14.1″ display. Not bad, not bad, but where are features like fingerprint recognition and a webcam for video conferencing?

Need one to throw in the bed of your Ford F-150? The XFR won’t come cheap. It starts at $4300 and weighs a whopping 8.5 pounds to boot.

I found this awesome laser-etched Macbook Pro Powerbook G4 on Tumblr. Can anyone identify whose it is or what that character is on the front? Very intense.

FCC Leaks Up and Coming Sony VAIO Netbooks

Most people think the FCC is all bad and all that it wants to do is prevent us from enjoying quality television with harsh language and nudity. Well, they would be right except that once in a blue moon the FCC blows the lid on some covert hardware that will soon hit store shelves. This time the FCC has leaked word of Sony’s latest VAIO netbooks.

Yes, you read right. It turns out that Sony does not feel too high and mighty enough to not compete with the slew of netbooks its competitors have been selling like hot cakes. Not much but enough is known about the two new models known as the PCG-1P1L and PCG-1P2L. The PCG prefix is known to represent Sony’s VAIO portable line and the dimensions of these latest models match typical netbook sizes, approximately 9.5 inches long by 4.5 inches wide. We’re excited to see Sony showing interest in the netbook market and can’t wait to get our hands on it!

New MSI Wind Netbooks Are All About The Juice

Word of MSI’s latest line of Wind netbooks has surfaced. Attempting to beat out its netbook competitors in battery life, MSI has unveiled the Wind U110, U115 and U120. The U110 and U115 stress battery longevity,  with a 6-cell battery that comes standard, an upgraded Intel Atom processor that uses 20% less power and a hybrid storage device that also uses less power, these latest netbooks hope to come close to a seven hour battery life.

As for the U120, it holds the same features as the original U100 except with 3G added in to the equation. Internet anytime, anywhere? So much for the competition.

Lock ‘Em Out With Text Messaging

If someone ever stole my car, I’d wish for a feature that would allow me to cause my car to blow up via text message. That’s kind of the idea behind Lenovo’s latest notebook feature: Lenovo Constant Secure Remote Disable Feature.

Important data on your computer that you can’t have falling into the wrong hands? A porn library you can’t possibly have your wife stumbling upon? This new service will prevent any such scenarios by allowing the laptop’s owner to shut the computer down over a WWAN connection and lock it. All it takes is a simple text message from a cell phone to cripple your notebook’s capabilities. That will teach them to mess with your stuff! Look for this new feature around Q1 2009 on Lenovo notebooks at no additional charge.

HP Unleashes New Netbook With Two Flavors

2008 has been the year for netbook madness. Ryan ordered an Acer, my friend John got an Eee PC and now HP is coming out with a new netbook that appears to be quite the offering. The Mini 1000 features a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom CPU, either a 8.9-inch or 10.2-inch display and up to 2GB of RAM. SSD is available in a 16GB drive or you can get a 60GB HDD for more storage. You can, of course, expand your storage via a USB memory stick as well.

As far as the OS goes, you can choose an Ubuntu Linux install that HP is calling the “MIE OS.” MIE stands for Mobile Internet Experience and essentially, it presents you with a bunch of commonly used apps and tasks that looks like an HP TouchSmart PC. Not bad. XP is also available for those looking to go a little more mainstream. The XP version of the Mini 1000 is available today for $399 with 512MB of RAM and an 8GB SSD with the 8.9-inch screen. For $50 more, you can score the 10.2-inch version. Look for the Linux version in early 2009.
