Art From Nikki Cook
Did you love our interview with Evan Dorkin? For a similar style in art (at least in my opinion), check out Nikki Cook’s work at her website. I hear she has a few graphic novels coming out. Might be worth investigating. Link
X-ray Art: I Can See Your Guts
In this crazy world we live in, anything can be considered art. Even something as simple as an X-ray photograph has the potential of becoming the next Mona Lisa. Wait, now that I’ve browsed through Nick Veasey’s work, I’ve got to say this is way cooler than the Mona Lisa. I mean c’mon, she’s just an unattractively fat woman with creepy eyes. I’m not sure how Nick makes these. I’m hoping he’s not actually taking X-rays of everything he sees,... Continue reading
Graffiti: Tomato Spray
My buddy Nick saw this Warhol ripoff in SoHo this morning. Very cool. Anyone know who did it? Link
Hello Nurse! Art Or Photography? We Don’t Care
Take a look at the image above. Is it a photograph or is it a painting? It’s actually an oil painting influenced by the aesthetic of black and white photography created by Adam Stennett. I’ve got no idea how he makes these images look so life-like, especially the water running down this lady’s crack. Hubba hubba. All I know is: I like. Link [via]
Da Vinci Alarm Clock Gets Back To Basics
Love making your life a living hell? Gotcha. This is the alarm clock for you then. The Da Vinci Alarm Clock will demand you stay awake for three hours at a time and then rest for thirty minutes. Why the odd time? Well apparently, according to lore, Leonardo himself followed this rigorous schedule. So essentially, buy the clock, become a renaissance man. Seems like a good deal to me. Old PCs Used To Create Virtual Sunset
This setup, dubbed “Mauritian Sunset ” by UK-based artist Sandy Smith, is made up of a ton of old, obsolete computers and monitors. Together they create a wall-sized installation that produces beautiful colors that resemble a “sunset” of some kind. While I don’t see the whole sunset thing, I think it’d make as an awesome lighting setup for a party or event. Want to see what it looks like from behind? Hit the jump for wires galore.
Rim Clock
Maybe I have issues but I get really excited over beautifully-designed clocks. Maybe it’s the fact that time is so precious, it must be treated with great artistic respect. Maybe I just took too much X in my teens. Who knows. One thing is for sure: The Rim Clock from Jansen Lye will look beautiful in any room. The pointed hand indicates the minutes while the stubby hand indicates the hour. Easy enough, no? Link [via]
Tech-inspired Sculptures That Come To Life
Creating artistic tech-inspired sculptures with nothing more than recycled goods and other garbage is a popular form of art these days. Like the City Foundry Bots or those mini-motorcycles made of old watch parts, these sculptures are made in a similar way but take it to the next level: they’re animated. We aren’t sure what mechanical artist Nemo Gould is going for with these robots but boy are they frightening. The sculpture picture above is called Little Big Man. Check... Continue reading
Celebrity Money
I can’t read French but I’m sure our publisher Steve Rufer would be more than happy to translate. All I can gather is that someone took pictures of movie stars and merged them with money. This is a pretty sweet but where’s the Mel Gibson photo with the $1 bill?
Banksy Gets Hit By Hurricane Gustav
Internationally acclaimed graffiti artist Banksy recently visited New Orleans to make some street art. When Hurricane Gustav hit the city last week, at least one of Banksy’s pieces was buried by the floodwaters. We’ll have to wait for the water to recede to see whether or not the artwork was damaged in the storm. At least one of Banksy’s other New Orleans pieces managed to survive the storm, but there’s still no info on the entire collection. Next time Banksy... Continue reading
