We’re Going To Google Like It’s 2001

Feeling nostalgic today? Take a trip back to 2001, when the economy was…well, pretty shitty. Dot-coms were folding left and right, TRL was huge and Google was gaining dominance. In honor of Google’s 10th birthday, our pals Larry and Sergey have launched a search page that uses the oldest available index the company has, which is from 2001. The old logo is even there! Search around for anything 2001 or earlier and you’ll find the results to amusing to say the least.

Esquire’s E-Ink Cover Dissected

Filed under: DIYs, Design, Hacks, Hardware

With Esquire’s 75th anniversary taking place this year, the magazine released its latest issue with an E-Ink cover that comes with plenty of bits and pieces for DIYers to take apart and mess with. Phillip Torrone of MAKE points out the minor potential the E-ink cover has in regards to hacking but approves of its design with much enthusiasm. He writes:

“I know a lot of media folks & tech sites are pooping on this cover - but someone needed to start somewhere, I’m glad there’s an E-Ink cover in existence, it’s clear it’s going to be decades until it’s something that’s very common…”

Hardware fused with magazines and books?  We approve of such devices. Can you imagine Mad Magazine with an E-ink fold-in on the last page. It’d be completely electronic and eliminate the need to fold it yourself. You’d never make a bad crease and you’d always see the fold-in picture, eliminating the enjoyment and frustration as you attempt to guess what it is in the first place.

Editor’s Note: That fold-in idea is a genius!

As many ways as technology has provided us to remember our anniversary, and as much as our lady friends might drop hints, we men always have a way to let the date slip our minds. Another stylish method could never hurt, especially one that goes to extreme measures such as the Hot Spot “Remember” Ring.

Described as “being hot enough to discomfort, but not enough to burn”, the Hot Spot ring uses a micro themopile to heat up to 120 degrees for exactly 10 seconds, 24 hours before your big day, literally searing the date into your memory. Let’s just hope you don’t forget to wear the ring as well. Available in sizes 10-13 for $760 (!) — Andrew Dobrow

Sony PSP’s lagging sales leads to ultimatum, changes on the rise

Sony is in quite a pickle. The sales of the PSP are lagging in a bad way with hardware shipments down 72%, and only 10,000 units in the U.S. With those facts in mind, it’s no surprise that retailers have begun to lost hope for Sony’s portable gaming console. Many have even offered Sony an ultimatum. Either lower the price of the PSP, or they’ll not be ordering any more.

With the two year anniversary of the PSP rapidly approaching on March 24th, a price decrease does not seem out of line. A year ago, on its first year, the price was dropped $50. Could we be seeing another decrease of $50 or more? While signs are pointing towards no, another method of warding off retailers might be on the rise. Will there be new color releases? Or could there be a redesigned PSP with the long-rumored 8 GB flash memory? Nobody knows, but something is going to happen. — Andrew Dobrow
