HTC To Ship More Android Devices This Year

Good news for consumers who are looking for a hot cellphone that isn’t an iPhone. HTC is set to release “at least three” new Android devices in 2009. The report comes from a Merrill Lynch technology conference where CEO Peter Chou responded to a question about Android-based devices. This is a good move by HTC. While the T-Mobile G1 is undeniably popular, its gusto is starting to wane. HTC can really spice competition up by unleashing three Android-enabled phones into... Continue reading

Google Morphs GrandCentral Into Google Voice

Google today announced Google Voice, an improved version of the GrandCentral service it’s been offering since acquiring the company back in 2006. Before you jump for joy, realize that yes, there is a wait list for invitations and people who signed up for GrandCentral will get first dibs. Among some of the new features Google will be rolling out with Voice include voicemail transcripts, Goog-411 integration and of course, the ability to use one number to ring all your phones.... Gmail Goes Down

News agencies from around the world are reporting that Google’s ultra-popular Gmail service has been down since this morning. You can still send and receive mail using a third-party program, like Mail.app or Outlook, but apparently, for most international users, the web service isn’t working. I tried logging on at 9:30am here in New York and had no problems. But it seems that the major outages have occurred in the UK and Australia mostly. Keep updated with Google’s official Gmail... X11 On Android: Impossible? Not Quite!

The X11 Window System, which is commonly used on Linux and sometimes on Mac OS X, has made its way to a new OS: Android. Using custom-built display drivers, hacked Debian shells, a VNC server and a T-Mobile G1, hacker Ghostwalker was able to get X11 up and running on the Android. This gives him the ability to run anything from Quake III to xeyes all on his G1 with whatever window manager he wants! KDE, Gnome and IceWM, oh... Continue reading

Android Market Finally Gets Paid Apps

The T-Mobile G1 is really enjoying its time in the limelight thanks to it being the only available Android phone at the moment. With that said, it’s taken Google quite awhile to roll out paid apps on the Android Market. This is no good considering that Apple’s App Store is the undisputed king of application shopping. It’s good to see that Google is finally catching up. Unfortunately, as you can see in the above screenshot, there’s no real useful applications... Continue reading

Having Fun With Google Maps

Seeing the Google Street View car in your area is nothing new. But what happens when you team up with said Street View team and act out weird scenes on your street? That’s what residents of Pittsburgh, PA did when the cameras came a’flashin’ down Sampsonia Way: On May 3rd 2008, artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley invited the Google Inc. Street View team and residents of Pittsburgh’s Northside to collaborate on a series of tableaux along Sampsonia Way. Neighbors,... Continue reading

Can’t Touch This: Apple and Google Canoodled

Remember the T-Mobile G1? It was a pretty big deal ’cause it was the first Android-based cellphone. Though feature-rich, a lot of buyers complained about the phone’s lack of multi-touch capability. As it turns out, Apple actually asked Google not to use multi-touch on the G1. Apple owns a lot of patents related to the multi-touch, so it’s a move that at least makes sense. The question is, should Google have caved in to Apple’s demands? Considering the patents at... Continue reading

Gmail Labs Gets Multiple Inbox Panes

Feeling frisky this Friday morning? Fire up Gmail and go to the “Labs” section. You’ll find that there’s now an option that allows you to view multiple inboxes at the same time. In a nutshell, you can essentially create multiple window panes inside of Gmail for viewing things like your inbox, drafts and labels all at one time. Pretty nifty, though I must admit, I’m not too big of a label fiend. I should be, but creating hundreds of a... Continue reading

Google Latitude Replacing Dodgeball?

The oft-troubled Dodgeball service is on its way out at Google but that won’t keep the company from innovating new products. Case in point: Latitude. Google Latitude is a new location-based social networking experience. You install a widget to your iGoogle page if you’re on a computer and mobile users can directly access the Latitude website. Users can see other friends’ location, update their status message (just like Facebook) and it’s all in real-time! Privacy issues will no doubt keep... Continue reading

The Google GDrive Is Most Certainly Real

My friends, do you see this image of code? This is code from a JavaScript file included in Google Pack, a suite of Google Apps you can download in one shot. Buried inside the code is a snippet on the oft-rumored GDrive. In case you haven’t heard, GDrive is Google’s way of having you back up all your data to their servers so you can access it from any location, from any device. Quite ambitious, wouldn’t you agree? Either way,... Continue reading
