First iPhone Push Applications Take Root

aim_push

Back when the iPhone 3.0 OS was first announced, one of the biggest features was that applications would feature push notification. Since the iPhone lacks multitasking, this would allow a program to act like your email and push updates/IMs/messages to your phone without it actually being active. Last night, AOL released the OS 3.0 version of AIM and we’re all very excited here at Gearfuse. Push IM is something I’ve longed for, especially since I’m always communicating via AIM. Both the free and paid versions have it and so far, it works pretty well. In the coming weeks, I’d expect to see a lot more push apps available.

Apple Sells Over One Million iPhone 3GS Models

intro-iphone-mapscompass-200906081

Ridiculous. Even with pouring rain covering half the United States, people still flocked in droves to the Apple store to pick up the latest iPhone, as we’ve come to expect every summer. Today, Apple announced that the bum rush picked up over a million iPhone 3GS models. And the madness doesn’t stop there. Over six million people downloaded the official iPhone 3.0 OS. Ridiculous.

iPhone 3.0 Tethering Hack

iphonetether

Oh man this is sweet. You see, this week, I got my hands on the GM copy of the iPhone 3.0 OS. I installed it, went “OK, cool”, went to revert and nearly bricked my iPhone. Somehow, two days later, it unbricked itself and went back to OS 3.0, which is what’s needed to rock this tethering hack. Here’s how it works (in short):

  • Have a Mac, iPhone with 3.0 OS installed and a pre-release version of iTunes 8.2
  • Install the iPhoneTether app
  • Hack some config files
  • Reap the benefits

While I’m desperate to try this out, I don’t feel like fucking up my iPhone 3G again. The poor thing’s been through too much trauma. Hit the link for 9to5Mac’s full instructions.
